what are the costs of importing a US vehicle

Anyone know the costs associated with importing a vehicle from the US into Canada, GST for sure, but what else? Inspection?
Thinking about driving home a slightly used Nissan Murano from here in Colorado.

OK these are the numbers he gave me, 6.1% duty, 6% GST, 8% PST plus whatever it costs to register the car in your province. You won't have to pay PST living in Alta.

Hey, thanks dude. After some searching I found those same numbers, but just don't want to get a surprise at the border after having already purchased something. I also found out the duty is only if the vehicle is actually built outside of N. America so it only applies to certian Japanese vehicles, unfortunately the Murano is one of them still built in overseas. There are a few other minor costs I read about regarding inspection and fees, and adding drl's etc

Np.

Well you can kinda get around some of the costs. What the guy at work did was get 2 bills of sale, one for the real price, one for a lower price to use for tax/duty purposes. He had them notorized so its all "legal". The customs guys got right in his face and tried to scare him into admitting that he didn't pay the lower price. He just smiled and said prove it. But I'm not sure if I'd risk it.

Anything made in North America is duty free (see NAFTA). Most imports are made in NA these days anyway. Just make sure the vehicle you want to import is acceptable by the Dept of Transport for importation. Here, read this and give them a call. It's not that big a deal and this will answer all your questions.
http://www.riv.ca/english/html/how_to_import.html
Also, make sure the state you're buying from doesn't charge an out of country person state tax.

If you want to import a new vehicle, be careful of warranty. Some companies honor new vehicle warranties, others don't. If ya wanna know more, just ask. I may know the answers

No duties to worry about on the Murano, but Nissan will not honor the warranty on a new vehicle. It has to be 6 months old, or have 12,000 km's on it.

They're not built in Tennessee?

Oh, and make sure you fax a copy of the title to a designated border crossing giving US Customs at least 72 hours prior to bringing it across.

The new Murano's I have looked at here in Colorado have stickers in the windshields that say they are 100% made in Japan with 100% Japan parts. The Titan's are made in the US though. We plan on getting a used 06 or 07 with low miles and registered for at least 6 months so warranty will be remain intact. Thanks for the replies. As soon as our new house is done and all the mortgage crap is finalized, we will be getting one, I'll post as to how it goes.

I thought about bringing up a truck from the south. My spouse is native so we don't pay the tax on the vehicle. I guess we would only pay the fees to have the vehicle shipped up and the appropriate fees??? The vehicle would be coming to Ontario.

Personally, I'd go down to pick up the vehicle myself. That way you're not buying it sight unseen. You can hire an inspection company to check it for you though.
To hire a company to transport it up and take care of all the paper work will probably run you somewhere in the $1500 range.

You must have daytime running lights on any new car/truck and it has to meet transport Canadas standard for safety, aside from the canadain government inspections, you will have to pay for a provincal inspection.

Its so F up you can not rent a car in the US and Drive across the boarder if your from Canada and plan on returning the car back to the US.

Canada custems is fearful your going to import the car !!!

Gst, air cond tax, tire tax (alberta ) 6.1 % tax and inspection fee's, unless the car is a high end unit, its not worth it, all canada customs is good for is removing money from your pocket, the do sfa othier wise.

Also you may have to pay tax's and canada customs interpatation of the cars worth, not your purchass price.
