Like I said I have the 2004 ford f150 (newer body style) with the smaller 4.6 liter v-8. Wondering what rear-end I have. is it the 9.75 or the 8.8? i also have the 3.73 gears with LS.

 

Should be the 8.8. Look at rear diff cover. 10 bolts = 8.8, 12 bolts = 9.75.

i was planning on gettin my 4.2l swapped out for a sohc mustang 4.6l. my truck's the 5-spd. manual 4x4, would i need a new back axel, driveshaft, etc., what do you think?

 

Not sure about that swap. If you are able to get some type of adapter to link the 4.6L to your current drive-train (i.e. your tranny) i don't see any need to swap rear-end or even driveshaft. I am not sure on the torque gains but I am assuming they aren't significant enough to change your whole drivetrain. Don't set my word in stone, hell i wouldn't even bet on it like I said not sure about this swap, never done it, never know someone to do it. Just thought I'd chip in with my opinion. Good luck!

 

Until recently, the 4.6 was available with a 5 speed manual (same gearbox as the 4.2) so that may not be a difficult swap. I would think as long as the engine is close to stock and you don't beat on it too hard the drivetrain should hold up okay.
