Question Aluminum Driveshafts

Ford in the past used aluminum driveshafts, like in 96 in the old body style and also on the new body style. Do they still use them in some trucks like in Reg cabs, because the two I looked at were reg. cabs, one was a 96 with a 5.0 and the other was an early 97 with the 4.6 My truck does not have an aluminum one, that is the first thing I saw when we went to pick it up, was the rusty driveshaft.

Question

Wouldn't the torque twist off an aluminum driveshaft?
I'm new to Fords and have limited experience with them - especially driveshafts..

Cool

The driveshaft on my truck as well as every other newer F-150 that I have looked at appears to be aluminun. They are of a pretty good diameter, 5" maybe 6" not quite sure.

I know they were in the previous models, but there is definately not one in mine. I thought it was kind of neat though. Maybe you have a point JC about the torque. The ones I have seen have been 5.0's and 4.6's, and mkrieger has a 4.2, so maybe the smaller engines use the aluminum driveshafts.

One of the first things that caught my eye when I crawled under there was a MASSIVE aluminum driveshaft.

Am I the only one that doesn't have an aluminum driveshaft. This sucks! Anybody out there with a 2000 that has an aluminum drive shaft?

j-c aluminum is a much stronger, and safer metal to use for a drive shaft, do to its rigedness (carbon fiber is better) 97+ f150's with a class III trailer towing come with a 4" diameter aluminum drive shaft. they also reduce rotating mass, thereby adding h/p

A friend has an F-250LD with the 5.4 and E4OD trans. His original drive shaft was aluminum. When he had the 2 speed gear vendor installed the new drive shaft that was made up is steel.
On my 97 F-150 the drive shaft is steel.
Maybe only the SC models had the aluminum drive shaft?

Raoul, I have the aluminim driveshaft and had one in my 97 also, both with tow package.
I believe, maybe you got the other "shaft", what do you think?
As far as the diameter of the aluminum drive shaft, mine sure looks bigger than 4" in diameter, closer to 5 or 5.5 "..

I am with you mblaster, maybe it is a 4x4 thing, I still wish I had an aluminum one because they look much better and are lighter.

Sorry Raoul, but I must confess. I have your aluminum drive shaft. I needed it to prop up the front porch. I can't give it back cuz ifen I move it two or three dawgs will die.

BTW: mine, a 4X4 SC, is rusted steel too.
