I've already been through 2 sets of goodyear fs-1's on my lightning and it only has 35000 miles on it. I know they are soft tires but I would like something that will last longer. Does anyone know about nitto nt 555's on the lightning? I'm not sure if it would be a good idea bc most lightnings stay with the goodyear fs-1. If anyone knows about the nitto tires i'd appreciate feedback. Also, what size would be the best fit? I don't race much and I want something that will look good on there.

 

Your asking a loaded question!! Everone will have a different answer. I myself have had the F1's, Toyos, and now the Hankooks!! The F1's gave the best ride and dry grip, the Toyos lasted longer and when I got them they were the only ones rated all season. However I found them to break loose in the wet easier. The Hankooks seem to be the best compromise between the F1's and the hard Toyo's. But like I said ask a 100 guys and get a hundred different answers. I am trying to wear my set out, so I can get something different, anything has to be better.

They are hard, hard to balance, very sensitive to psi, suck bad in the rain, not to bad in snow. I have called them, and they just don't care.

 

The Nittos are very similar to the F1s both performance and wear rate. You should try the search function here, you'll get all the info you ever wanted.

 

appreciate the advice... think im going to go with the nitto nt 555... my only question now is why i cant find anyone else who has put the nitto's (295/45ZR-18) on their lightning.. everyone usually puts a different size nt 555 on, so im not sure how well the 295/45ZR-18 would work.... thanks for the help tho

 

Listen to Artie. I went the same route as he with my 2000L. You cannot beat the Hankook's. I also think you should stay away from the Toyo's. I had a set I could not wear out, but the noise they were making made me give them up. Just my two cents.......let us know what you end up with and how you like them.

 

Many people who run the Nitto DR's on the back run the 555's up front in the stock size. Should be no problem if you're ok with buying front tires every 20-25k miles.

 

Ok, I may get hammered here. But I put a set of Hancooks on the front of my L about 6 months ago - I could not afford F1's at the time. I'm sure there's a performace gap, but I personally like them so far.

 

In Florida my set of F1's lasted me less than 6,000 miles and they did not grip as good as the Nitto 555's. I've had the Nitto's on now for close to 20,000 miles and they have held up well. They are ready to be changed now and they will be replaced with Nitto 555's.

I just put a fresh set of F1s on my track wheels, which I am using on the street while my 20s are down for some cosmetic repairs.

I had forgotten was a fantastic tire the F1 is. It's easily the best all-around tire I've ever had on any vehicle I've owned. The combination of grip, noise, wear, and comfort is remarkable.

Sometimes the OEMs get it right from the start.

 

What Don said!!! Gave(traded in) my Proxies away with maybe half the tread depth left and replaced them with F1s.

i used to have the nitto 555 on my truck. They lasted me appprox 25000 miles. The f1's i had before lasted me 25000 miles too. I bought the hankooks a year ago. i like them and hopefully ill get more than 25k out of them, im quite sure i will. unless ur totally serious about racing this thing, just get the hankooks.

 

I agree on the Hankooks. I been thru 2 sets of F1s on my '99. I never could get an even wear pattern on them and I balanced and aligned the truck religously. The Hankooks are wearing great and I can't tell the difference performance wise from the F1s.

 

Excellent performance tire. But poor tread wear. I do believe he was compalaining about that. I know here in south Florida with the percentage of coral rock in the asphalt, tires last 25-30% less than most other regions. I have owned them all. The Hankooks (Tim I know your adore that name) are an excellent compromise of performance and superb wear. My personal opinion is that considering over 75 % of our trucks are pushing 400 + rwhp, that a street tire that can sustain good dry traction is almost comical.
