There are two routes that the air flow can go. Fresh or Recirculated. Recirculated air is used in the MAX AC and the OFF modes. All the other AC positions are fresh air. There is a flapper that controls this. If you turn the knob to OFF it will shut the flapper and that may be what you are hearing.
