Question about changing tranny fluid..

Out of all my time on this forum, I've never seen this particular question answered. And that is, if I drain my torque converter when I change my fluid, how does it get refilled? Does it automatically get refilled when I fill up the tranny? Also, how much fluid will I need? Transmissions are unknown world to me... :o

The torque converter is filled from the transmission's pump.

The amount of fluid that you will need is 12-18 quarts, depending on which transmission you have.

Fill, run at idle, fill again.

I had torque converter shudder with my 97 4R70W, and just changed the fluid. I did not physically drain the torque converter, but pumped in new fluid. I disconnected the line from the aux cooler, connected a hose and ran it into a jug. Run the motor, parking brake on in drive to cycle new oil through the converter. I pumped out 2 quarts, then added 2 quarts. Did this 7 times and now no more shudder.

I used 13 but have the extra 2 quarts TCI aluminum pan, so pretty much bank on 11, but should buy 12 (a box worth) just in case you end up short. I haven't checked how I'm doing, level seemed good the last time, but it's been about a month since I've changed it so better re check.
