I made a big mistake. I flushed the tranny fluid and used Mercon V. I know I have a 4R100. How this happend is my oversight. I did two other vehicles that day and I thought I use the right stuff. One '92 F150 and a '99 merc sable. Question is. Will this damage the tranny? If so, how?

 

Mercon V now is the correct fluid for your transmissions in ALL of those vehicles..

The fluid spec was changed via TSB this summer as Ford is discontinuing the licensing of the manufacturing of Mercon.

Just go drive 'em and don't worry about it.

The ford powertrain engineer I talked to awhile back said to me that the E4OD/4R100 was designed to have no friction modifiers in the fluid. I don't know what to make of this random spec change other than I'm stockin up on Motorcraft Mercon.

MerconV is not the correct fluid for a 4r100,e4od or 5r110 transmission. Those require mercon fluid. As far as i know all other ford transmissions are rated to use the merconV now.

With all due respect, the TSB is quite specific.

It states that all applications that previously required Mercon may now be serviced with Mercon V.

If you're still concerned about Mercon vs Mercon V, just use Dexron III after the inventory of Mercon is depleted.

I was on the website (Factory Teck) for the heavy duty rebuilt 4R100 and it said not to use Mercon V in the 4R100. I bought a case of Mercon and put it next to my bottle of R12 freon for my 89' Bronco. One week V is bad for 4R100 and next week its OK, what's that about. Like I feel I can trust Ford to look out for my welfare once I hit 100K plus.

 

Actually, just a minor point, but the torqshift requires Mercon SP.

Yes i see that it says that now, but i'm wonderin if the bean counters forced the engineers to say that. Love to talk to someone in ford about it.

Well heres the TSB. I have a 98 E4OD that requires MERCON III -per manual. MERCON III ? It doesn't exist!! Heck with it, - Using Castrol with a taste of Lubeguard.

The TSB put out last summer converting all "MERCON" known to mankind - 2 MERCON V.

You are mixin two things up. There is no Mercon III, just Mercon. Which happens to be the same GM fluid spec as Dexron III.

Haynes & Chiltons has MERCON III listed - I know some of you have a book look it up.

 

What manual is that from? There is no such thing as MERCON III, regardless of what's in that manual.

There is MERCON/DEXRON III, and that's where I think the mixup comes from. DEXRON had a III version, but there never was a MERCON III.

 

Haynes & Chilton's manuals, MERCON/DEXTRON III ,they just shortened the name along with many others out there (I googled lol) Found allot of articles that had the 4R70W's all get 5 , but mann I'm telling yuh, when it comes to the 4R100/E4OD I can't find a straight answer any ware, I'm not sure anyone knows for sure. As the manuals state MERCON III which is just short for MERCON/DEXTRON III , It's not just "MERCON" What else would reason? Crap!! Maybe it is, Idunno!!

 

You got it, very common to shortin the ford and gm spec together and make Mercon III, but there ain't no animal from Ford.
