6-Speed Tranny

I have finally come to the realization that the tranny Ford is putting in these new trucks are inadequate for high hp/tq motors. So, I'm asking all the tranny experts at there, is it possible to drop the new 6-speed tranny in a 04-07 F150? Any idea on the cost involved?

The 6 speeds are controlled way differently than the transmission in an F150, with a dedicated transmission control module. It won't be a matter of just bolting one in and driving down the road.

This has been rehashed elevenity times already; whenever the 6.2 liter gas engine and the diesel comes online for the F150 (sometime in 2008-09), there'll be a new transmission, mostly likely a variant of the 5R series 5 speed automatic.

The 6R is out now in the Expeditions right? If the Expy has a 5.4L, then what's the big deal?

Because the Expedition and Navigator run off a different communications network than the F150 does. The 6 speed would bolt right up, but then the F150's PCM would be looking for references from a transmission that's no longer there since the 6 speeds use dedicated control modules. Sticking an Expedition PCM in it wouldn't work either, since the Expedition's PCM has more functions to handle than the F150s; now the Expedition PCM is trying to do things that it can't in an F150.

Forgive my ignorance. I understand what you are saying about the PCM, but what is the differences in the PCMs? What are the more functions that you are referring to? Other than the obvious 4-speed/ 6-speed difference? I was thinking it would just be a tranny and PCM swap. If tuners can access the pcm for things such as timing changes, why couldn't the pcm be customed programmed to work with this truck and tranny? I appreciate your help.

Just believe quintin. He is a ford dealer technician and knows his chit. If he says it won't work, it won't work. It ain't like the days of old when you could do that kinda thing anymore

Don't get me wrong, I believe Quintin. I'm just trying to learn. If the reason this can't be done is software related, then would it not be possible to make changes to the program?

So, assuming that my suggestion is impossible, what tranny would be recommend for a forced induction motor approaching 450 rwhp that is still used as a daily driver?

Are you saying that this tranny is compatible with my pcm? The local tranny guy, my tuner, and a local high performance shop all told me TCI and B&M was the best transmissions. Have you heard different?

No I am not saying that the tranny is compatable with the PCM. But if you want a stronger tranny this is the one to go. Getting the PCM to operate it could be done by a competent tuner. You could ask these same people about your tranny and what they have available to beef it up.

What if you change both the pcm and the tranny into a f150. Just change the whole assembly.

Just in it to learn to

Apparently, not as easy as it sounds. I asked my tuner the same question and he said it couldn't be done. Quentin posted this also, I believed him, but I just wanted to know what the obstacles were. My tuner told me the pcm is, from what I understand, completely different from the F150, and SCT has not cracked it yet to allow for changes with this tranny. At least, that's the way I understood what he told me. Anyway, I've give up on the 6-speed, I'm now looking for a way to make the stock tranny much stronger. I should be over 500 lbs of t/q after today, so the tranny is going to need some help. Problem is, there is not a lot of aftermarket stuff available for the 4r75e. The only thing I can find is the c-plate from Factory Tech. I'm currently looking for a converter.

What about a torque shift out of the Superduty? It is CAN compliant since 05. It is used behind the 6.8 and that is rated at 455 lb-ft of torque.

I would just find a wrecked navigator with the 5.4 4v and 6spd and swap the whole motor/tranny/pcm/wiring harness out if thats what you want.

Then again it might just be easier to hack up a expy and put a bed on the back

But seriously tho, my roomate went from an automatic 4L60E in his camaro ss to a T56 6spd. And he had to litterally change every wire on the car to get it to work. Basically his 2000 SS automatic now thinks its a 2001 TransAm with a 6spd. And visa-versa

Never say never, but like quintin is suggesting, it wont be anywhere near practical to do as a self taught shade tree mechanic or w.e So be prepared to shell out some big bucks to have it done, IF you can even find someone that will agree to take on the job
