The stock speakers are paper cone, 6X8, 4 ohm, 25 watts. The factory 6CD is about 22.5 watts per channel, which is really a bit too powerful for the stock speakers. A new head unit may improve sound quality, but you won't be able to take advantage of any added power.
You can add an MP3 player to the factory head unit if it has the AUX button (and if you don't have the factory DVD system which uses this channel). The FRD04-AUX adapter costs about $80-$100.
I retained my in-dash 6CD player since a comparable after market unit is difficult to come by. If you want better sound, all you need is a better set of speakers and maybe a powered sub-woofer (get one with speaker level inputs which feeds right off if the speakers).
