New deck install looks like S#$@

I am a simple man.... I just wanted my new Pioneer 3800 C/D deck installed.

You have a double DIN factory going to single for the new unit. OK you just use a kit with maybe the extra space blocked off, yes? No. I got some hole/compartment right over the deck. Its like 1.5 tall by 6 wide and 3 deep. Can someone tell me WTF I am supposed to use this for???

I can also see stress cracks at the back of the compartment (it looks like some used garbage) Even the deck itself don't fit that great.

I guess I will be going back to see the management.

I'm pretty sure all the install kits for our trucks have that hole. It can be used to hold CD's or the remote to your head unit, your wallet..whatever.

It shouldnt look like crap, shouldn't be cracked and the head unit should fit pretty nice in it. Deff. take it back and ask to have it done over.

Yeah there were all kinds of issues going on at the install shop. One guy apparently got his windows screwed up during speaker install. There was talk of "Chevy dealer estimates" for repair.

Good to know that the hole is normal for our trucks even if it don't look good to me. I'll go back and ask if there are any other options and point out the stress cracks.

That's why I do all my mods myself. You can't trust people to do things right anymore.

That's how it should look. You said your compartment is over the deck? That could be the problem. Usually they're on the bottom. If they installed it upside down that would explain it not fitting well. I like the compartment on the bottom. I bought a Sticky Pad at Best Buy for the bottom of the hole and I keep my iPod in there and my cell phone. They don't slide and are an easy reach.

It would be a nice place to add an EQ.

Tardman's looks good. My compartment is not as tall and is worthless for holding anything. However I have decided to live with it. After this truck I think next I'll get a Boss or Lightning and the deck in that sucker had better look right!

Hey Franko, find out which brand of dash kit they used. There are really only 2, Metra and Best. I haven't had any problems with the Metra kits. We stopped using the Best kits last year at our shop because of defects. There are Scoche dash kits but I have only seen them at walmart. Surely they are not using those.

Thanks Radio.
I got it installed at a Best Buy and I think I will have one of their other stores look at the install and tell me what they think. I believe they put in a used kit due to the serious scratches I see at the back of the compartment.

Your head unit looks good. Where did you get it installed? I got an Eclipse installed from Circuit City and it looks like the same surround but my head unit isnt flush. It sits further back, probably about a 1/4 of an inch do you know if this is normal or fixable? Also when I dim my interior lights the lights on the head unit flash. Is that normal? I wouldn't think so.

Thanks,

Doug

I installed it myself. I am not sure as to why yours sits furthur back in the dash, as there are a number of ways to adjust the HU to get it to fit just right. I probably tried mine 3 different ways before I got it right where I wanted it. I removed the metal sleeve from around the radio and used the mounting brackets that came with the kit. I also removed the plastic surround that comes on the radio from the manufacturer. You may want to pull it out and try it a couple different ways, but if Circuit City did your install then they probably didn't give you the left over pieces. I would take it back if you're not happy with it. There's nothing retailers hate more than an unsatisfied customer. If you have to just get loud, and mention that you'll tell everyone how horrible their road shop is.
And when I dim my interior lights my HU flashes also. But only when I dim them all the way. I go almost full dim before they flash.

There's nothing wrong with scosche kits. They actually have a CD holder that fits right in the pocket...kinda cool and cheap fix for the pocket.
