Basically your right with both because it allows manual on/off or it just works on its own. As long as you know wiring and where to tap into, your all set. Mine comes on at a pre determined temp by installing a probe through the rad fins, not sure the exact temp but guessed good from where I stand. I'm still debating on putting a manual switch in, maybe on day. For now, it even cycles on and off with the A/C compressor, which helps.
