axle nut size?

axle nut size?

posted this in the wheel/tire forum and received no response....I just need to know the socket size for the axle nut, to take off the front knuckles..thanks.

I think it is 36mm.

Depends if it's a 2wd or 4x4.

2wd is 36mm - don't know about 4x4.

never used a socket on fronts just a large pair of channel locks...........

How you gonna get 200+ lb-ft w/a pair of channel locks????

You're not, but he may not need to... One only needs 13 ft*lbs on the spindle nut of a 2wd.

According to the factory manual (which I'm looking at right now) - it's 400 Nm/296 lb-ft for the spindle nut for the 2wd (which I said before). For the 4wd, it's called something different - axle-to-wheel hub nut and it's 27 Nm/20 lb-ft. Not sure where you got 13???

ONLY FOR THE 4WD. Try that on a 2wd and IF the wheel turns, the bearings will be cooked in about a block!

Oh, and I mis-spoke. For the '01 mentioned in the first post, if it's a 2wd, it's supposed to be done in three stages, with the final torque being 13-17 in*lbs

So the factory manual is wrong? I installed a lift kit and torqued the spindle nut to about the limit of my 1/2" drive torque wrench - 200 lb-ft. I've had no problems whatsoever.

Are you talking about a 2005 or a 2001? I can't vouch for the 2005, but a 2001 2wd has conventional cone and cup bearings, and yes, they are supposed to be torqued in 3 stages to 30 ft*lbs, then backed off two turns, then to 17-24 ft*lbs, then loosen the nut, then tighten to 13-17 in*lbs, followed by the installation of the retainer, cotter pin, and hub grease cap.

It's section 206-03 of the '00 and '01 manuals, steps 6-11.

Also, I believe they changed the spindle setup on the 2wd for '04. I haven't looked at one, so I can't say for sure. I'll have some reading to do on them in teh AM when I get to work.

My bad - 2005 - integral bearings, etc. Spindle nut holds the whole works together - no bearings to grease, no castle nut, no cotter pin, etc. It all makes more sense now. I wasn't paying attention to his model year.
