AOD vs 4R70W What is the difference?

Hi,

I am a first time poster and I hope one, or several, of you can answer a couple of questions.

First of all, I own a 1995 F-150 XLT with a 302, or 5.0 L for those of you into the metric system.

The Data tag on my door says I have a 4R70W transmission but when I had my transmission rebuilt I was told it was an AOD.

How can I tell the difference?

Secondly, how do I adjust the linkage. A couple of weeks ago I started to have trouble going to into reverse from drive. I checked the transmission fluid but it was full.

Today I had a problem when I tried to start my truck it wouldn't start, the lockout prevented it from starting, also when I put the shift lever into neutral, it would start. At the same time I also noticed that I couldn't place the trans into park. With the lever all the way to the left, past Park, It still would not go into park. When the shifter is in this position and I turned off the engine, the truck rolled backwards.

I have chocked the wheels and put on the emergency brake.

Any info or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Doug

AOD was used from 85 till 93 although not very common after 91. 94 was the start of the 4R70w in the trucks behind the 302.

Sounds like you have a bad tranny range sensor. It controls the trans from the shifter cable input.

I just know the AOD/AODE kinda turned into a 4r70w, like a new updated version, because it is still basically the same. Even when you buy aftermarket, it will usually list all years and what vehicle. When I bought my pan, if it was for these models (AOD) use this pan gasket, for the others (4R70W), use this one. And also, the 4r70w is also in mustangs and other cars as well, not just trucks.

You may have misunderstood what they said or they left the E off the end.
You have an AODE which is a 4R70/W.
There are two versions of the 4R70, one has a low first gear (the W designation) and the car version without.
The difference between the AOD and AODE is the AOD is only hydraulic operated, while the AODE is a combination of hydraulic and computer operated.
The two bolt up to the same engine but that is the extent of it.
Some internal parts are swappable to upgrade the older AOD.

Nope. All 4R70Ws have the same gear ratios. AODE trans don't have the gear ratio changes.

You may be miss understanding me but there are two versions of the 4r70 gearing. The W designation is the low first gear that is used in both the trucks and some cars.
What don't you understand about this? Do I have to refer you to specific cars that use these versions or are you playing games with names?

All I was trying to say was physically they were about the same, leaving gear ratios and all that stuff aside, I said basically. I also realize the E at the end of AOD has electronics with it versus the older hydraulic only.

AOD was used up until 1993. One svo cobra version had the 4r70w gear ratios. The crown vics, towncars and mustangs recieved the aod gearing in aode transmissions up until 1996. Trucks,Thunderbirds and MarkVIII's all got the 4r70w gearset in them making them 4r70w transmissions. Other differences include the 4r70w had the larger extension housing bushing.

I must be playing games with the names.

If the trans had the 4R70W name it had the wider ratio gears, if it had the AODE name it did not have the wider ratio gears. There never was a 4R70 without the W, and no 4R70W had the closer ratio gears.

AOD vs 4R70W What is the difference?

I have to thank all of you, the information provided has exceded all that I have learned to this time.

I have gone to each of the links all of you have provided.

Thanks again. The invoice did in fact say AOD but after talking to the tech which worked on this tranny, and he conceded that I really DID have a 4R70W.

Thanks again to all of you.

Doug
