Gonna have to look for your trans code on the door jam sticker and then look here.

I'm in a generous mood however and say that if you have a code of E (the E4OD trans) use Mercon/DexronIII, and if you have the more common for your truck code U (the 4R70w) use Mercon V.

Maybe I should have said "AOD-EW".

A special version of the AODE was released in 1993 with the Lincoln Mark VIII. This AOD-EW included wider-spaced gears for relaxed high-speed cruising and stronger internals. This transmission was later renamed 4R70W."

i once owned a 1997 f150 with that engine. The trans. came with the mercon III but you can change over to the mercon v since it is more synthetic and better for the trans. but do not mix the 2 together. i would change out the filter and flush the whole thing and start from scratch. you will notive a big difference when you flush the trans. you are going to have to change the fluid atleast every 25000 miles if you want to keep your trans. working in the future. I know have a 1997 f250 light duty with the e4od trans sometimes called the 4r100. much better than the other.

The E40D is not the same as the 4R100.
The 4R100 replaced the E40D.
Ask your transmission rebuilder....
