Simple question, how much towing capacity would I loose when running 35" tires? They'd be BFG KO2s if it matters.

 

You won't lose any capacity as long as the load rating of the tires is as high as the OEM tires. Technically, you will lose the difference in weight between the OEM tires and the new ones, but that's negligible. You will exceed one or more of the other limits before you reach the published max tow rating.

Not yet, I guess I'm just planning ahead haha. I plan on getting a lariat screw, heavy towing pkg with the 3.5eb. If im looking at it right, I should get about 11k pound towing capacity right?

 

Towing capacity is one thing, but gvcc is another. I have a 2015 with max tow package and the eco boost engine. The carrying capacity with people and load is 1865 lbs. If you are getting a fifth wheel the pin weight is roughly 20% of the trailer weight. It would not take much to be over the weight limits. You can tow it but you may not be able to carry it.

 

That's 11k under ideal conditions, you will run out of some other limit (generally payload) long before you reach 11k. If you plan on towing more than 8k with a normal family and luggage load, get a Super Duty or a F-150 with the HD Payload package.

 

Thanks. I really want an F150, but I also really want a trailer that will make it work. I just hate to buy a 250 when I will only really use it a few times a year. I'm waiting till 2016 anyway, so I'll see what the 2016 250s look like. Thanks again for the advice!

 

I believe with 35's you will lose some towing ability unless you re-gear to a numerically higher ratio. Ford tow ratings are different depending on gear selection - hence the max tow gets a 3.73 (I thought 4.10 was available last year??) 3.73 ratio is effectively reduced when 35" tires are introduced, you would need at least 4.10 and 35's to maintain close to Ford's published numbers. about a 1/3 of the way down and look at the chart to see what I mean. 35s can be heavy, almost twice as heavy as a "p" rated stock size tire. Tirerack publishes tire weights.

 

I got 2005 f150 with 35s and 456 gears. I'm towing work and play 27ulps and a harley in the back. I just take it slow and easy and don't overwork the truck. You will not be able to maintain speeds on the highways when you hit a hill. Don't over rev the truck to maintain speed.
