I'm guessing that the hole is to accommodate the step, whether your particular vehicle has it or not. They aren't going to make a different tailgate for those with the step. My '13 has a similar hole.

The bigger problem than the hole, is the mystery of why it's there

The hole is for the bed extender. All the F-150's have the holes in the tailgate, because it's cheaper to make and you can always buy the bed extender after market.

Well thanks 1depd.
I just put a rubber grommet in the hole. Your answer makes sense. And as I will never own a bed extender, that's a permanent fix..

The dealership put in on for me and it was ordered off the ford website accessories page yes, but I don't think it's a ford product. Hope this helps.

So far so good. The truck is more like a car than my 2013. It is quiet and smooth. The tires have a little shake at 80, but I am not sure it's worth going through the fight of having them keep it for a day and then tell me it's fine.
This is the 3rd EB I have had and really like it. The truck is lighter than my old one as well.
It is very comfortable with a lot of luxury for an XLT.
It seems to be a little lower to the ground than the old one as well. I am out on gravel roads as well as farm fields and it drags the air dam a lot.
All in all I like it. Interior is very nice.

I love mine. Good power, decent fuel economy and has all the amenities you'd expect from a luxury vehicle. Ford did a superb job!
