Hmmm, they deleted the SFE package? Maybe it didn't help as much as they anticipated? Or maybe the non-SFE package is mind blowing enough.

What cab size do they use for EPA testing? SFE would be late availability and they dropped it in 2010 so I'm thinking they decided it wasn't needed. You can still build one, but without the badge. Now they can market one straightforward rating and say the F-150 doesn't require any gimmicks like a tonneau cover to boost its rating like a certain competitor.

Thanks for posting. 36 gallon tank should allow for near 1000 mile ranges with some of the configs! I don't see the 100 lb advantage in GVWR for the supercab vs. supercrew.

Ford now only needs to hit 24 mpg hwy to dethrone the Ram EcoDiesel due to the differences in fuel prices.

http://calcnexus.com/fuel-cost-calcu...mpg2=28&calc=1

AAA National Avg.
gas $2.97
diesel $3.59

I think the "S" stands for "special, but FE is fuel economy. It's a specific option package that bumps the EPA gas mileage figures up a bit. The last SFE F-150 was the 09/10 2wd with the 4.6 3V, 6 speed, 3.15 axle, and I think some aerodynamic aids and low rolling resistance tires.

SFE stands for 'Superior Fuel Economy' I believe.

Two reasons why I believe they dropped SFE (Superior Fuel Economy) 1) Falling fuel prices will make the SFE package a tough sell and 2) since all their 2.7 EB 4x2s will have auto start stop and achieve around the same fuel economy, there's no need for the SFE model. Every truck will have "superior" fuel economy.

So you are telling me that the decades long trend of improving mpg as well as the millions of dollars spent on R&D of developing the world's 1st aluminum truck is going to be marginalized since there is a current dip in gas prices. Get real. People still have the false notion that the 2.7tt will get as good as or better than the base v-6. All evidence so far has shown this to be likely wrong. SFE was a gimmick anyway.

Ford introduced SFE in 2009 when gas prices went up and fuel economy concerns went from 10th to 3rd place among buyers. It was dropped because all of the trucks with the 4.6 in 2wd got the same fuel economy. I admit fuel economy is becoming less of a concern to me as gas prices drop to $2.50 or less. Drill baby, drill!

You can get a SFE on a 2015 F150, but the only difference is Ford is dropping the badge. All the SFE was is the standard XL or XLT with a tonneau cover! The tires and wheels are the standard equipment. See the build and price. You don't get anything else. So if you wanted the SFE badge you'd be waiting for late availability for the Ford soft folding tonneau cover.

As far as the aluminum goes, the benefits in fuel economy savings will be marginalized if gas prices go down (same as with the Ecodiesel - diesel makes less and less sense in a half ton now) but it was also there to meet CAFE - which should be repealed by the way! CAFE was a relic of the 1970's the curb gas usage. But it didn't work. When mpg went up, people just drove more and used more gas.

There is more to aluminum than just fuel economy: durability, resists dents, less prone to rust, adds more payload and towing capability, better ride and handling, better braking. It helps everything, not just fuel economy.

So should Ford have kept the SFE and rating with just with the tonneau cover? That's up for debate. But Ram only got 1 mpg in the city with it on a RC and the hwy mileage stayed the same. Doesn't seem worth it and might add confusion. I say buy your own tonneau cover. I doubt the 3.5 will get better mileage. All of the work went into the 2.7 to get better mileage and the 2.7L has grille shutters and start stop and the diesel like tech.
