Question 3.73 Gears not an option anymore?

Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Trying to put together a 2015 Platinum FX4 on ford.com and regardless of engine choice (5.0 or 3.5 Eco) I can't select 3.73 gears. Best I can get is the 3.55 Locking.

Is this because of the Max Payload order stuff going on with Ford?

Wait.. I can't put 3.73s on an ECO. I can put them on the 5.0L.. Are 3.73s not an option for the Eco?

The Eco develops so much torque across the entire RPM band, I doubt the higher gear ratio is needed.

I thought the original question was whether or not they were an option, not whether or not someone thinks they are needed?

I just checked, and the Ford website allowed me to build a XLT with max tow and heavy duty payload with the 3.5L eco and 3.73 gear ratio, or 5.0L and 3.73 gear ratio.

Edit: Maybe it has something to do with options/combinations.

I have an XLT 2.7 with the 3.73. It must be a Platinum thing maybe?

I don't think you can get the HD Payload package on a Platinum.

No, it's a 3.5 EB thing. Emissions and EPA gas mileage certification.

You need the HD payload package to get the 3.73 with the 3.5L EB. That package is not available with the Plat.

Hence, the 3.73/3.5EB combo is not available on the Plat.

My plan was to run 35s on it so I was thinking about trying to get the tallest gearing I could since I will still be towing a 22 foot full liner bay boat as well.

glc,

I thought you could get the Max Payload on the Platinum with the 6.5' bed?

If that's what you are going to do, I'd get the 3.5 EB. You will need the extra low end torque regardless of axle ratio. Expect your gas mileage to suffer quite a bit and you will need to get your speedometer/odometer corrected.

There is no Max Payload. There is Heavy Duty Payload and Max Trailer Tow. Max Trailer Tow is available on the Platinum with any bed. HD Payload is Lariat or below.

That's good thinking. At least you are going into this knowing you need a lower gear for bigger tires. Many people don't think of that and wonder why their truck won't pull. You might want to step down to a Lariet to get the lower gears you need. Or, you could just have the gears switched out when you get it.

An Ecoboost with 6 speed tranny isn't going to have pulling problems with 3.55's and 35's.

Really I think that would depend on how big of a load you're pulling and how steep of an incline you're going up.

I don't think it matters - at worst the transmission will downshift 1 gear more than it would normally. The 2013 Screw Limited 4x4 with 3.5 EB pulled the Ike gauntlet towing 10800# (trailer and payload) at the speed limit (60). Granted - it did have 3.73's and stock tires (32"), but remember the 2015 weighs less.
