A NA 3.5 is rated to tow 7100# but I don't think I'd try it cross country, a 4x4 crew cab is a pretty heavy truck. It's a good little engine but it's lacking torque. If all you are concerned with is gas mileage get a 5.0 V8, it can get mileage just as good as any of the sixes and will tow 3200# like it's not even back there.

I should have said towing is once to alaska and then maybe a week ayear mid west.so I am looking for best mileage most time and ability to tow few weeks a year. I was assuming 5.0 would be low mileage like my old 5.4 was.

Go to the 2009-2014 section for some good discussions of fuel mileage. I have the 5.0, and the consensus generally is that it has significantly more power than the 5.4 while getting better fuel mileage than the 4.6. That was definitely the case with my brother and I in 2013 in a trip to the border. The 5.0 makes the 5.4 feel like a slug, especially after 25 mph. I've towed up to 8 or 9,000 pounds with ease.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's not a way to override the stop/start feature. There is on my brother's Audi I believe.

The 2.7 isn't proven like some of the others, but it's definitely got guts based on multiple tests I've seen.

Not a good assumption. Mileage is significantly better, we have people breaking 20 mpg on the highway unloaded. Real world fuel mileage with the 2.7 isn't significantly better, reviews are in the 16 mpg range under test conditions.

I have averaged 19.2 for 18,000 miles with my 2014 5.0. This is about 80% highway. With the cruise set at 75 and no significant head wind, I get 21 to 21.2 all the time. I get 16 to 17 around town.

What gear ratio do you have?

3.55, 2 wheel drive XLT Supercrew. I don't drive it easy but neither do I hot rod. Occasionally hit it pretty hard to pass on a two lane road. I do avoid idling as much as possible. That is a mpg killer.

I am averaging 20 mpg on my screw 2.7 4x4 3.73 eco. I can pretty easy do 24-25 mpg at 75 mph if it is a nice not to windy day and pretty flat highway. Yes, the auto stop\start feature can be disabled by pushing a button above the radio if you don't like it. I have gotten used to it and find it really does seem to help with the mpg's, especially at some of the 3-4 minute stop lights and road construction we have in my town. Haven't towed with it yet but I am sure it would handle your 3200# without any problems.

No doubt the 2.7 can tow well - TFL ran one up the Ike Gauntlet at 60 mph towing 7200#.

On a highway run hauling about a half ton, I got over 21 mpg over about 175 miles on two or three occasions. Average speed 70. 4x2 Supercrew 5.0. I never could duplicate that on this particular return trip, more like 19-20. Prevailing winds, more stops?
