Ok I am always reading about the 5.4L motor, but what if I not looking for more power like everyone else. I currently own a 07 HD F-150 with the 5.4L and find there is more than enough power for me. What I want is more MPG. I am considering looking at the new 4.6L 3V with 292HP and the 6 speed auto! How many more MPG can I expect out of this motor compared to my 5.4? Will I notice a difference in power between the two? I am guessing the new 4.6 with the 6-speed would out run the old 5.4 with the 4-speed? Is there any numbers on this new motor in the 09 F-150?
I would expect that you would only average a 1 or 2 mpg increase by choosing the 4.6l and so far from what most reviews are saying that the new 6 speed is only helping with towing and shift smoothness. So don't expect to be able to outrun a 04' 5.4l.
We have the 4.6L 6 speed combo in a Explorer Sportrac.
It's a pretty good combo though the tranny does seem to get confused sometimes.
MPG not really that great....probably around 20mpg @ 70mph.
Yes I know not to buy a truck for MPG. I just don't need the power I have in my 07 5.4L so when considering a new truck I am thinking of MPG vs power. If 300hp is good for me now I think 292hp will be enough for me. I was hoping for real MPG not just what ford says. I don't tow, I just use my box to haul stuff around.
Consider that smaller engines work harder to perform the same amount of work a larger engine does. Work harder = use more fuel.
Not quite... I got 19.2 mpg for hauling a bed full of computer equipment the past 2 days in city and highway. Wait... I'm the exception because I drive stick and only shift below 2000 rpms, like vehicle should be driven.
It's funny when I drove an Edge, the rpms soared to 3000 to 4000 rpms all the time I went from a stop. It's so funny, here I am doing 20 mph, and it's at 3500 rpms.

You're the same dude that slammed on the parking brake of an automatic transmission equipped vehicle, thinking it was a clutch.
No offense, but I don't think real highly of your opinions or experiences.

hahaha. i have outrun a stock 5.4 in my 4.6 with 35's. dont ask me how but it happened. i think you would be plenty happy with the 4.6 3v. i wish i had taht much power. but if you have the money i would get the 5.4 anyways. im assuming you do since your ditching your 07 HD for a 09.
Well I think I am just going to wait until I see what MPG everyone is getting with their new 4.6 3V. I just didnt really want to wait for the eco boost to come because I am sure it will need 91 octane and that really takes the advantage away from it. From research it looks like Ford is the only one with a good second choice motor for MPG. Only time will tell. Thanks to everyone who replied.
