oil filter
i have a 2014 5.0 f150 super cab i had my truck at the garage 3 months ago they changed the motor oil and oil filter, well i tried to take the oil filter off the truck and i cannot budge it(it like they used an air wrench to tighten it up) when i change the oil filter i just tighten it 3/4 like they tell you . i was wondering what type of experience any body else has from a private garage.
Thanks in advance Ralph

If you serious beleive that they used an air wrench to put the filter on I would NOT use that shop again!! Filters are only supposed to screwed on until they TOUCH the engine and then turned an additional 1/4 of a turn. They're not even HAND TIGHT. Over tightening will crush the gasket and will often MAKE them leak.

I've resorted to driving a screwdriver through the filter and twisting it off numerous times over the years the first time I changed the oil. I install them as tight as I can with my hand and that always works. They don't leak and are easily removed with a filter wrench, except for that 75 Honda Civic with CVCC engine I bought new. The filter would become loose and start leaking if it wasn't tightened more than hand tight. Out of about 60 vehicles I've owned over the years, that was the only one that had to be tightened more than hand tight.

I've never done that because there is oil left on the sealing surface and it isn't necessary and the old oil left on the sealing surface is perfectly fine for lubricating the gasket. IMHO

Get a set of the oil filter pliers and never have this problem again. They look like a set of slip joint pliers with big jaws on them that bite into the filter and won't slip when you're putting pressure on it. They tear up the housing so they only work for removing a filter but they're worth their weight in gold when one is stuck on.

Try one of these to remove the filter if it is stuck:

Or just head down to your local sears and pick one up. They work well.

On a related note, whomever installs the filters at the factory apparently doesn't lubricate anything either. All of my Ford trucks with the modular motors (both 4.6 & 5.4 liter) were a total PITA on the first oil change. Not only was the seal not lubricated, but the filters were torqued to about 857,000 ft lbs. Many bad words were used.
