Extended Warranty on 18" Chrome Clad Aluminum Wheels??
Greeting Dudes (and Dude-ettes)
I just bought a loaded XLT 4x4 from Whitman Ford in Monroe Michigan. I haven't taken possesion of the vehicle yet, but while in the Service Manager's office, signing all the paperwork, he tried to convince me to buy an extended warranty on the 18" Chrome Clad Aluminum Wheels. 5 years for $600. He claims when people hit our pot-holes here in Michigan the wheels are breaking. I told him if that were true, Ford was selling an un-safe product sorta like Toyota.
Do you guys purchase this warranty? I di-int.
He kept telling me that if the warranty wasn't purchased at the time of vehicle purchase, I wouldn't be able to buy it later. I kept telling him I didn't think it was necessary. He spent at least 10 minutes on the subject.
What do you guys think? Should I have bought it? I don't drive that much anymore, being retired for the last 9 years. I don't do off-road and I gave my 2001 Buick LeSabre to my son which only had 18,000 miles on it.
If anyone has had their wheels break, I'd like to know about it.
Thanks,
Krayven

The dealer is absolutely full of coon squeezins. The 2009+ chromes are plastic-clad. At worst, you pop the plastic and it breaks. It fits over the aluminum rims and is most likely retained by a few clips and the lug nuts. The 2008 and earlier clad 18" had a thin chromed steel cladding that was shaped over the aluminum rims. Good deal not getting crewed for the $600.

the thing is Ford doesnt cover "damage" unless it is found to be the fault of the product. Hitting a pot hole and braking a rim doesnt really fall under a defective part. Warranty like hes is trying to sell you is something the dealer comes up with on their own, the tricky part is getting them to actually own up to the warrany...i bet their is some real trickery in the fine print..
