4.6L 3V 6spd vs. 5.4L 3V 4spd

In the near future I plan on replacing my 1993 F150 and have been eyeing up 04-08 5.4L F150's. I may be in a position to swing a 2009 4.6L 3V due to the cash for clunkers bill if it does get passed. A 2009 5.4L gets 1 MPG worse (combined) therefore wouldn't work for me considering my "clunker".

Anyways, are there any performance numbers (0-60, quarter mile etc.) out there comparing the two engines in a similar equipped truck (maybe a Scab 4x4)? Or people out there who have gone from the 5.4L to the 4.6L 3V?

I'm thinking the two are very comparable with the 5.4L at 300hp, the 4.6L at 292. The 4.6L is down on torque but maybe the two extra gears make up for it???

I already own a 4.6L 3V in my Mustang that takes me to a 13.5 second qtr mile, but the F150 is a whole different beast!

Thanks

ive heard great reviews about the 3v 6spd combo. my best friend (a chevy guy) drove his bosses 09 and he thought it was a 5.4 and was very surprised to find out it was a 4.6

the 4.6 3v has been in the expy and explorer since 06 or 07 with great reviews from them to.

my personal experiences with 4.6 2v is that its capable of exceeding the mpg estimates with a few simple mods

The 09 5.4 has the 6 speed, 310 hp, and is rating the same mpg as the 4.6 3v (except the the SFE package). If you are not towing much, I would expect the 4.6 3v to be sufficient.

After I re-read the title of this post, my comments are null and void.

For so many reasons other than the powertrain I'd choose an 09 over an -08 for the same price. Bonus 6-spd FTW!

I traded in my 98 5.4 and got the 09 4.6 w/ 6spd. I was a little skeptical about it at first as I was use to driving my father in-laws 98 4.6 (if we switched trucks for something) and thought it was going to be a real dog. I was very surprised at the response on the 09 4.6L / 6spd combo. I think you would be happy with it.
