Cause of intermitent engine or driveline vibration???

Guys my '06 5.4 4X4 has an intermittent terrible vibration that will cause the engine to start to run rough - extremely rough. So bad that the truck feels as if it will die. I can't really describe it except to say that when it first happened I thought I had a flat tire, so I can't say it's even in the engine. The trans shifted normally as far as I can tell.

Now here's the weird part: I shut the engine off and after restarting, the truck runs fine. No engine light. It's maddening because it occurs only maybe once a week. Any thoughts on where to start??? Anyone had this issue before???

Did either of you scan it for pending codes? Even without a cel, there could be codes pending that a scan tool will read.

No, not as of yet. I did clean the Mass Air Flow and it has not reoccurred. I thank you for your response and of course the next logical step is to scan for codes.

Clean the throttle body too. How many miles on the plugs, cops and fuel filter? Checking your fuel pump driver module above the spare wouldn't hurt either.

A parts store can plug into your obd2 port and scan to see if there are any pending codes. It's usually free, too.

Do you have a 3v 5.4? Could be the injectors.

Otherwise:

- Faulty Crankshaft Position (CKP)
- Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor harness is open or shorted
- Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor circuit poor electrical connection
- Ignition System
- Fuel Injectors
- Running out of fuel
- Fuel Quality
- Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)

P0316 is misfire on startup. Probably time for new plugs and coil boots.
