2004 - 2008 F-150

paint peeling

I have a silver 06 and noticed that the clear coat and paint are peeling below the rear window and on top of the cab. Is there a way I can fix this before it gets to bad without having to get it repainted professionally

Short answer is no...

I was a painter in a past life...I can't begin to count the amount of Ford peelers I painted working in a body shop that did work for the local Lincoln, Mercury dealer...that was in the 90's...

My 05 is peeling also...so far its just the fender and hood jambs, and inside the tailgate...mine is Medium Wedgewood Blue/Arizona Beige...just the blue is peeling...

Basically, all of the offending paint needs to come off to repair properly...

kcward is correct. The paint needs to come off, and properly repainted.

Back in '95 era, we had a recall from Ford on our '92 F250 that involved the paint. They had to sand every bit of the truck and repaint it.

Looked awesome after it was done...

I did so many Ford peelers that I could strip the paint off of them (horizontal surfaces) with a single edge razor blade without scraping the e-coat...Taurus's,Escorts, T-birds, Cougars, and F-250's...I'm disappointed that my 05 is peeling...and rusting in the roof dams under the moldings (I think that is from having a windshield replaced. Installer lifting the molding with a screw driver probably).

GM also had their problems in the 80's-90's...Toyota and Nissan solid blues were also very prone to peeling...

Don't get me started on the paint we used to refinish the cars...Sherwin Williams clear would peel at about 3-5 years...so glad I am not in the business anymore!

My '95 T-bird with factory paint started in the center of the hood and roof in 2011, in late 2013 I had a guy repaint the hood and roof ..... $700 ...... looks good. Trunk just started between glass and spoiler, I park it so the trunk stays in the shade and it seems to have slowed the process. The sides on the car look new still.

My Toreador Red '01 Merc GM (and '07 FX4 and our '08 Mustang) stays parked under a carport when not in use, the Merc I've had since 2001, and besides carport it has always had a cover or two on it .... paint looks new still.

I know that it's been a problem since clear coats became the norm and I know it's something to do with the sun. The sun has always been a paint killer, but with CCs .... it looks like a more agonizing death. I recall neighbors having everything above the accent stripe of their '86 SHO Taurus repainted by Ford for it when it was just a year or two old. Likewise, I've seen GM and Chrysler products doing it as well. It starts and usually ends on the horizontal surfaces with most direct exposure to sunlight.

Pain Peeling on the fenders, inside the hood well.

I have slight paint-peel/flaking on the fenders, just inside the grooves where the hood rests. It is happening on both sides. I bought a couple of touchup pens to try to seal it and keep it from spreading. Anyone see this before, or have any thoughts before I attempt this stop-gap measure?

Usually paint peeling in the areas you speak of are signs of a previous repaint or panel repair. Alot of shops will tape/mask inside the jambs to prevent overspray inside the engine compartment, ect, ect, and repaint just the outer surfaces of the vehicle.

Later the slight tape lines hidden in the jambs can start peeling or flaking due to lack of prep in that area.
