20 inch tire recommendation

I have a 2005 FX4 pretty much stock and I have OEM 20 inch wheels and the terrible terrible Pirelli ATR tires. I guess I shouldn't complain too much. I got 48k miles out of them and they are still black and round and hold air but beyond that I have had enough and they are getting pretty worn.

I plan to do 275/60-20s and have narrowed it to 3 choices:

Nitto Terra Grappler
Goodyear Adventure with Kevlar
Goodyear Silent Armor

The nittos are the cheapest and the delta to the most espensive silent armors is about $300.

Looking for some feedback from folks who have had some of these tires.

The truck came stock with 18s and the Goodyear Wrangler AT/S tires and I loved how the truck handles and drove.

Thanks.

Cooper AT3s. Got them on my stock 20s. Truck rides like a dream now. Good traction in snow and mud too.

Perfect tire size. I'd get Terra Grapplers from those listed, but look at Toyo AT and the Cooper line up.

They have 48,000 miles, are still black and round and hold air ... what is the "terrible" part?
I only ask as I have same on my '07, the factory tires, and it just tripped 48,000 and I may replace them soon ..... but I've been happy with them.

I've got the GY Wrangler Silent Armors in that size and they're great. I heard they were discontinued though. If you can find some, you won't be disappointed. But all three are probably pretty good choices.

I've had the silent armors almost two years now. I've put maybe 25k miles on them and they look to be about half tread. My only complaint is some of the white lettering is starting to wear off - if you're a blackwall kind of guy then that shouldn't matter.

Here's some photos if you're interested https://www.flickr.com/photos/437599...7632284847655/

Cooper Discoverer AT3's are great. This is my third set of tires and I like these the best. Mine aren't 20's. They're LT265/70/17 load C. I've had them one year, put over 20k on them and the tread still looks brand new. It's 17/32nd deep when new.

Lastly, here is a pic of the tread from today. 23k miles on these tires, rotated every 6k. They're a 50 psi tire(LT load C) and I usually run them at 44 psi.

Thanks for the tip on the Coopers. I will check that out. The Pirelli's have lasted but they are just horrible to drive with. There is no stable on center position. The truck wanders both left and right... all depending on what the road surface is like. On long distance drives it almost feels like I'm developing carpal tunnel in my wrists because I am constantly making adjustments to the steering wheel. I've had the alignment checked over and over by numerous shops and it really came down to just swapping tires around until I got the best 2 up front and the driving is almost tolerable now. Its almost taken the fun out of driving this vehicle. Even though there is tread left I'm done. And I am also seeing a lot of cracks forming around the bead area of the tire.

Hmmmm, I haven't had that happen on my 275/55-20s yet, looking at tread depth I'll be replacing them come Spring though. I do run about 44-45 psi in them and that does make them drive some better than using the door sticker recommended 35 psi.

I can understand that .... and yeah, my OEMs have some very shallow faint cracking in the same area.

I will try to post some pics of the cracking. It isn't minimal. With these tires the straight line drive is twitchy at best. however, it's better than where I began. when they were new the truck would pull to the left and as you corrected the wheel further and further then like a coil spring the truck would then dart for the right burm and you'd pull the well to the left further and further until it leveled out and then it would dart back to the left ... and it would do this cycle endlessly. I found one stretch of flat concrete interstate north of Statesville, NC on I-77 near the rest stop where the truck would drive in a straight line for about 2 miles. Everywhere else it darted left and right. Don't get me wrong I'm not a big complainer. I just sucked it up and dealt with it for 2.5 years now. but the sidewall cracks make me think it's not a good idea to do any additional long distance driving with it until they are replaced.

Pirelli Free

Well, the family came down with a really bad cold so the tire change got delayed. I decided to do the Cooper Adventurer AT/3s and got them for $915 out the door including road hazard, lifetime balancing / flat repair, etc. I looked at both the 275/60 and 275/55s and decided to stay with the stock 55 series. They are pretty beefy and I couldn't be happier. These tires are uber quiet and pretty stiff. The FX4 now seems to have regained it's chops. I will try to post a few pics this week.

So what's the difffence between the Adventurer AT/3 and the Discoverer AT/3?

Ha ha that is hilarious. Yes they are Discoverer AT/3's. I am new to the Cooper tires and still have a lot of fog on the brain from the last month of one flu or virus after the other and I got the name wrong. I have now driven about 500 miles on these tires and they are just fantastic.
