Custom Exhaust on my Harley

So I keep thinking about getting an exhaust. I really was looking into getting the magnaflow 16616 system. its the dual exhaust in front of the rear tire.

But I am wondering if I should just piece it together by getting the same muffler used in that exhaust system and then just picking out two exhaust tips I like. A local shop said if I bring muffler and tips they can make something for like 90 bucks.

So basically I can get a similar system with I hope the same sound for like half the price. magnaflow exhaust is around 650? and me piecing it together is around 300.

What do you guys think? I have never done this before. but its hard for me to spend 600+ on an exhaust for my work truck.

Definitely piece it together. Even if it dusts out within 5yrs you may want to change it up any way. I would use a Borla ProXS muffler or a XR-1 series muffler though. Better tone and build over the Ma gnaflow.

oh wow thanks for the advice, I just saw the magnaflow exhaust and thought it sounded good. but maybe ill do a little more research. also looking to do a side exit exhaust in front of rear tire. bad idea?

didn't want to do the dual rear exit for the fact im in construction and tow a lot so I don't want to reverse into a trailer and smack the exhaust with the trailer

I had rear exit duals and tow a travel trailer. It was loud. I almost went with side exit on my new exhaust but I decided I didn't want to clean tips anymore so I turned them down right before the rear end. Sounds great!!! I wish I did my system this way the first time.

I would have to say gains would be pretty minimal, but there are quite a few ppl on here that know MUCH MORE about it than I do. LOL! Like Darren, for example. He DEFINITELY knows his stuff.

I plan on getting the intake/sct tuner combo within the next month and plan on doing this exhaust soon so that way I can get custom tunes through 5 star. wondering what gains to expect with the intake exhaust and tuner.

can anyone help me out? I am looking at the borla one in two out muffler but I don't know what size to get the inlets/outlets. I believe I need the 3inch inlet and 2.5 inch outlet. can anyone confirm this? basically just trying to copy the roush and magnaflow side exit before rear tire exhaust system

also I am seeing on the borla website an option for a notch on the muffler. what is that?

The exhaust won't add a whole lot of wide open gain until you enlarge the midpipe to 3". Stock is 2.5". 3" will also sound deeper toned and cleaner. I would get a mandrel bent 2.5" piece of t-409, Magnaflow #10778 Y pipe ( single 3" to dual 2.5" ), 3" intermediate pipe, and a 3" inlet Borla muffler with the dual 2.5" out.

ok so my stock y pipe is current outlet is 2.5? and the y pipe you mentioned replaces my stock y pipe and gives me a 3inch outlet?

so then I need to get the y pipe your talking about, then get the borla muffler that has the 3inch inlet and a 2.5 outlet? im trying to figure out all the pieces I need so I can take everything to the muffler shop and have them weld it up.

so this is what I want to get.

basically I am going to get the muffler but a borla version and get some black tips off of ebay and then have local muffler shop weld it up. I don't get y I need all the other pieces you mentioned. I am a bit confused.
