Ultimate Cam Phaser Discussion
#31
I had an 05 fx4 and it had the cam phasers replaced 2 times in 60k and the truck still knocked like a diesel.. What oil and filter i run is wix filters and pennzoil plat 5w20. If i still had a 5.4 3v i would look into the cam phaser lockouts. My plan of action to eliminate the cam phaser noise was to get a 97-03 f150. Now i dont have to worry about them dang phasers. Ps i talked to the guy that bought my 05 and the engine had to be replaced at 100k. good luck

No 'ultimate' Cam Phaser discussion thread is EVER going to be complete without a Link to Steve Bassen's Legendary 'How-To' on the subject:

Carry on
MC 5w-20 semi-synth & MC FL820-S, no rude noises after 6 years... but I'm lining up my ducks just in case Solenoids first.

^ yup. thats what the mechanic at my dealership said. They are inherantly noisy.. They can replace them, but he was like, I wouldnt waste the money unless they ABSOULTLY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. which mine do not. they are just starting to get noisy... i think most of my noise is the clicking from the injectors anyways. And i like it when people ask me if i have a diesel f150 lol

Correction - I don't think oil weight has much to do with it. All vehicles that spec 5w20 is for CAFE laws and gas mileage claims. The same motors in the united states that spec 5w20 spec 30w in other countries. I'm not going to beat a dead horse, it's been covered many times

Another example. The new 5.0 mustangs. They have cam phasers too. 5w50 is the suggested weight. Just like stock gt500s
People can use whatever oil they want. I won't use 5w20 in any of my engines. Why? Because it doesn't offer the level of protection a 10-30 or thicker offers. Dont take my word for it. Please do your own research. Also do a search for c.a.f.e. laws wile you are at it.

Diesel noise from these engines is not always the CAM Phaser. Lash adjuster combine with a loose timing chain tensioner (and/or broken guide/Rail) will make you think you need to change the CAM Phaser. But really you need to replace the timing chain tensioner (blown gasket) or timing chain guide and/or rail along with the timing chain. Which when bad ... causes timing chain slap noise. You can tell if the timing chain guide/rail is broken by taking off your oil pan and looking up behind the crankshaft ignition pulse wheel. Most times you will see of piece of it laying right by the crankshaft.
One more thing about using 5w-20 oil .... this thin oil does not cool as well as thicker oils. Once you have taken one of these motors apart you too will be able to testify how the engine ran too hot by the signs from the pistons and out-of-round cylinders.
I know ... because I have read many a threads by many of people with the same old advice "Change the CAM Phaser" ...
I am in the processor right now of rebuilding this engine and I am here to tell you ... it is not always the CAM Phasers.
Just my two cents!
By the way ... these are not cheap engines to rebuild if you choose to do the job better than a Ford Crate Motor reman!
Just as an example ... at least one of my main crankshaft holes had .001" taper in it stock from the factory. Not good when you have only .0009" oil clearance over a width of less than an inch on these mains. You really need to start with a round straight hole to put the main bearings into. Or right off the assembly line you have a main bearing starving for oil on half its bearing.
