well it was a bit messy and somewhat time consuming. the parts that i had trouble with were of course setting the preload an measuring the backlash with he dial indicator. i wasnt sure where to mount it because ive never seen it done LOL.

but other than those two aspects it was pretty straightforward. again i wouldnt recommend anybody try it unless theyve seen it done and have the proper tools. and if i tried it again i probably wouldnt be so lucky but hey ill take it as a blessing that it worked out ok

You know, forget everything I wrote. I'm gonna be so bold as to actually doubt you did anything at all. Why don't you convince me of that instead?

1) How is it if you don't have the tool to press off the pinion bearing that you reused the same shims in your install?

2) How did you get the original pinion out?
2a) How did you get the differential out?

3) How did you press on a new inner pinion bearing?

4) What did you do with the pinion bearing cups that came with your master install kit?
4a) What did you do with the diff bearings and cups that came with the master install kit?

5) How did you crush the crush sleeve? As in, how did you prevent the pinion from rotating as you tightened the pinion nut?

6) I don't see any pictures in your gallery. When I did my first gear setup I was so damned proud of myself I have four dozen pictures of it. So does everyone else I know that did it themselves for the first time. Where are your pictures?

7) How can a guy who did this himself not know there are two pinion bearings?

8) How can a guy who has Internet access not know how to use a dial indicator to set backlash? There are only two dozen pictures of it in the first three pages of a Google search.

9) What was messy about the install? Other than the reused differential, everything else was brand new according to you.

Be all the offended you want but I'm calling BS on the whole thing......

I have no doubt that Smok][n did the install himself, and I have no doubt that he got extremely lucky, based on what he has revealed thus far about his installation.

I also have ZERO doubt that arrabil has done this the correct way and knows first hand EXACTLY what he's talking about.

The closest I got to a gear change is simply swapping out my 3rd member on my Mustang. (yes, I had two of them each with a different gear). Since my mustang is putting down 3-4x's what our trucks are, I leave it to a friend who does this for a living to set up the 3rd member.

ALLCARFAN,
My advice is to be 100% sure that who ever is doing this gear install for you will correct anything that goes wrong with it at no charge (provided it's related to workmanship of course).

Since these trucks are not laying down crazy HP numbers, any competent backyard mechanic can do this with the right tools and experience. But as arrabil stated, don't guess or take short cuts, cause the results could easily cost much more in the end. Smok][n took the dive and appears to have surfaced unscathed, but he has told us this already. If you have ANY hesitation, let a professional do it.

BTW, I just sold my 4.30 R&P on NMRA forums. It was a Yukon and was very dependable. I currently have a MOTIVE 3.50 R&P installed in DetroitLocker now. (3.50 due to all the torque the motor now makes due to the sc'er). So far, so good on the Motive's.......

i dont feel like convincing you of anything at all. sorry to make you type all of those technical questions in vain... if you choose to believe that i made the whole thing up then go ahead.

i completed this install 2 years ago and to be honest i dont remember all of the steps and parts of the install. i have been diagnosed with ADD and sometimes cant remember where i left my wallet 2 minutes ago. that combined with smoking too much of the green stuff back in the day, has left me with somewhat less than a photographic memory.

ive been posting on these forums for 5 years now and have never BS'ed anything. im just not that kind of person.

ill give you that you know more about gears than i do. i'm not in some kind of competition here. and ill give you that i probably shouldnt have attempted this install on my own, but thats how i am. i like to take chances, especially if i can gain some sort of knowledge or experience in the process. it doesnt always work out the way i want it to but oh well thats the price to pay.

im not a know it all, and i will admit to someone when i dont "know it all". but it appears to me that your knowledge in this area has given you the right to be the "gear police" pointing out other peoples flaws even thuogh it doesnt really concern or affect you. im fine with you stating the correct procedures for this application and pointing out what i have done incorrectly. i just get a little peeved whan i get accused of potentially putting people in danger because they followed my advice, when i have given none other than to buy a new pinion bearing(S). what people do with their trucks is their responsibility. im not trying to sell "Smok][n's Halfass Truck Repairs" manuals here.

maybe from now own ill have to start putting disclaimers before all my posts so i dont get sued...

EDIT: and oh say i say messy because of the differential fluid. i hate the way that stuff smells and i couldnt ge rid of all that smell for a while...

this is my final post in this thread. im not one to start trouble and hate to see a perfectly good thread closed because of an arguement.

I'm not trying to be the gear police but gears that aren't properly setup can jam together and cause a traffic accident. Look it up, its a very real and serious concern. If that isn't enough reason to convince everyone reading this that what you did was irresponsible, and posting how much success you had even more irresponsible, then I don't know what else to say.

But I am 100% convinced that you never so much as removed the pinion from the housing. I wouldn't even say its my opinion, its just glaringly obvious from your posts.

Any mod reading this SHOULD close this thread and even delete it. There is no useful information here. Just lots of nonsense and self promotion.

I don't know what to think but I'm sure Smokin did his install. I'm pretty competent so I've been tempted to do the install for a long time. The one thing I fear is being shy'd away from something I may be capable of...

The person that is doing my install is knowledgeable and a friend of mine. I have no doubt that he will stand behind his work. I just have to take some time off of work to get my truck to him.

I am not making any crazy HP numbers. Only a little over 400 at the wheels now (estimate), but I plan to be nearly 500 at the wheels by the end of this year.

I also ended up on mine just using stock shims, but reversed them from each side. Got me at the far end of "ok". They were a little loose but nothing to be worried about. Just got a new pinion bearing setup from Napa. Crush sleeve came with my gears. Got the royal purple through one of my whole sale accounts.

Just updating this. I got my 4.56s installed today by my friend. I ordered the minor install kit from Ronsmachiningservice1 on ebay (see link on the first page of this thread). When I opened the box today, the items were wrapped in newspaper and ziplock baggies. Some parts did not look new. I was missing two bolts and was given the wrong pinion seal.

Fortunately, I reused two bolts for the ring. I did have to make a trip to the autoparts store to buy a new pinion seal. Two stores didnt even carry them.
