Store bought CD's work ok - if ANY imperfections on them they skip... But have hard time making any MP3 disk work or any other burned disk.
Tried WAV format - tried duplication of an exact CD - plays a little them skips or says BAD DISK eventually..
Any ideas? Just my radio?? I think it may be the radio -
BTW I have tried several different CD writing programs..
Try burning at one speed, and try different brand CD-R's. This is not particular to the ford unit, those are the standard rules on home made CD's not playing in any player.
Don't expect RW discs to work. Only a few machines play them.
Change brand, change color. Some of the cheap greens play better than the top line golds.
Each machine has it's own tastes..
Although, if you do these things, you want to complain to the dealer if it still doesn't work.

Some of my hard copy CDs wouldn't play on my CD6/MP3 player. All my MP3s run fine though, I burn them at 192K/s with Memorex CD-RWs. They're kinda silver/goldish looking, bought 'em at Wally World if I remember right. I use Nero to do them, they're worked like a champ thus far.

Wish it were that simple. The cheap ones work better than the name brands in 40% of players.
I get good results on 5 cent apiece ones, and have had the worst luck with the Memorex.
DVD blanks are nowhere near as finicky.
If there was a simple way to tell which disk would work best in all players, I would love it, but every lot is different, and every brand uses different lots.

Memorex sucks IMO. I use ritek DVD media and it works great. Hasn't skipped a beat. I bought a 100 pack at newegg for 38 bucks plus shipping. My wife makes up nice labels for them. We don't leave them in the truck during the day so they don't get hot.

Yeah, strange about Memorex, dunno why they suck, but they seem to. Had good luck with Ritek, all right. Don't think I've had a single coaster with them.
Newegg isn't always the cheapest, but they are the best.
I like to buy my blanks at Fry's when they have the 50-100% rebates. So I'm cheap...
I don't use labels, spent time cleaning bits of them out of clients machines, also have to agree about the findings on problems with balance.
Of course your mileage may vary, and a pretty label is cool when someone loads one of your disks...
Got a heat resistant caddy in my truck, keeps them cool, sure ruins em fast when they get hot
Used Fujifilm brand blanks - Nero 6. something..
burned as a "clone"
Burned as music cd
burned as data - wav files
burned as data MP3 files
burned as MP3 disk.
Used Memorex and all the same 'burns" with Nero
Tried WMP 10 - burning program
= 18 disks that play AWESOME (except MP3) in all my other cd players - NOT IN MY NEW 05 Fx4 !!!!!
It plays fine until track 4 ish - then skips and crackles and eventually I give up or the HU does.
My wifes car is an 2002 model that doesnt even claim to play CD-R - and they all work in her car!
I JUST WANT TO PLAY MY MUSIC !! AHHHAHHHH
1400 miles and 50 cd's worth of frustration........
me and all of my friends use a bootleg version of Easy CD Creator. No matter what brand of cd we use they always work in our/my cd player ( 05 6cd/mp3) However, the format that the cd is burned in is the most important for mp3. I have to make a data cd and put all the files in at least one folder if not several ( if i want to seperate them) Just burning mp3 or wav files on a cd w/o the folder gives me a bad disc display
I was kind of doubting the unit from the git-go, when you said your CD's skip. I have CD's that look like they've been hit with an orbital sander, and my CD-6 plays them like a champ, with NO skips. My experience with CD players has been, the more apt they are to skip, the more finicky they are about reading various CDs. Just my opinion.
I burn mine with Nero 6.0, using SmartStart, click on the musical note thingy, then "Make MP3 disc." I haven't had bad luck with just about any R or RW disc I've used to make MP3s, I've used Memorex and HPs. The HPs get kinda dicey, but the Memorexs work fine. I'm inclined to think that you might have a problem with the head unit.
I have a Pioneer that plays MP3s and it is very picky about burn speed. Try to burn a couple disks at the slowest speed that your burner will support.
I tend to agree with PNF - If your normal retail CDs are skipping, then my guess is there's something wrong with the unit itself. Take it in and make the dealer look at it.

Yeah, Memorex were horrible in my previous truck, would start skipping like mad in on a couple of tracks. So I've avoided them since I have actually found DVD's to be more finicky. Not really an issue on my recorder, but rather on people's players. Here's a nice compatibility list I'll check before I'll buy a stack on sale:

Those people are great. Never buy ANYTHING DVDwithout a quick check on their site. The best.
Guys put DVD players in their trucks, and then find they can't use DVD-R. Who want's to carry a bunch of 20.00 DVD's in their truck? A 25 cent blank can melt, and who cares?
