5.4L 3v - Removed Charge Motion Device?

Crew,

I understand that the base of my 5.4L 3v intake manifold that there exists a set of 8 plates that closes (blocks flow to speed the air) during low speed operation for emissions.

Anyone out there remove this from your intake manifold (I've been told that this is simply bolted to the bottom of the intake manifold)?

I'm thinking, who cares about low-speed emissions....bring on the high rpm power by getting this crap out of the intake tract.

Thoughts?

Risks?

My understanding was that these actually help produce more torque at low RPMs....or at least I thought I read that somewhere when researching my truck before I bought it. I didn't think they had anything to do with emissions

lariat is correct...these 'valves' act very similarly to the reed valves in two stroke engines that were so very hi-tech many years ago.

Charge Motion Control Valves

Specially shaped metal flaps that speed up the air intake and create a tumble effect in the combustion chamber.

Provide quick and efficient combustion, especially at lower speeds.

The 4.6 Cobra guys did this with their intake manifold runner control valves sometimes. Ford Racing Products sells an eliminator kit that does away with the IMRC valves and actuators and stuff. I don't think you can do it with the 5.4 3V, at least not easily, since the charge motion system is integrated with the drive by wire system. And besides that, it's a truck. I want all the power down low I can get.

Aw heck, we can just buy one of those 'Tornado' gadgets advertised on TV for $49.95 and bolt it on our intake for an instant 50% increase in power and fuel economy.

Just think of the possibilities running two Tornado's in series...

acutually JMS is selling the Charge Motion Delete plates for the 05 GT. Not sure how big a difference there is but I was just letting you know that it is possible. Check out how fast they have a bolt-on 05 GT running at JMS

Check out their section on their Silver Bullet.

Charge-motion devices do indeed improve combustion efficiency at low engine speeds. For emissions purposes.

They do nothing at all for low-end torque and may affect high-end power by being restrictive.

I could not find the 'delete' kit on the attached website but am interested if someone can point me in the right direction....

Thanks.

I have an '05 Mustang GT to go with my '04 Lariat and have been hearing things about these CMPs. The 'stang guys are reporting top end gains but losing a bit of their low end. The gains appear to be negligible - a few HP at most. I'm not planning on this mod, but A PCM tune + CAI are definitely in my future.
