F150 7700 cracked rear axle
Hello everybody,
I´m currently chasing a 2000 F150 7700 and a friend just had a look on it since I´m in Germany. He took some pics and test drove the Truck. Everything is perfect beside that little oily patch at the rear axle.
It could indicate a crack in the carrier or the welding seam.
What do you think???
Is that a known problem at the F150 or is this a result of heavy abuse?
Is it easy to find a replacement axle (10.25", i=3.73) in the Bay Area CA?
Cheers Ben

Well for one a closer picture would be great as I can barely see what your talking about.
Is it a common problem to crack the housing?
No
Is it possible?
Yes
Pull the diff cover and check for fluid. If it is dry its obviously a point of interest but if there is sufficient fluid in it and looks like it has been in there a while than I wouldn't worry to much. Those rear ends are pretty solid and I would think that to crack it would take a tremendous amount of force like hitting a rock or something major while driving. Did you bother to ask the guy what it was used for? History? etc...
Personally on a 2000 7700 w/200K on the clock I would chance it if everything else seems in order.
FWIW the shocks look to be OEM if that tells you anything about maintenance...

Hey, thanks for your reply.
Unfortunatly I don´t have any detailed pics and its a 2,5h drive for my friend to have a second look.
The real question is if this is just a nOK welding seam or a minor crack that makes the axle swetting a bit. If it is not the welding seam, it means the crack went all the way through the material.
Do any of your trucks have a wet patch at this area?
I´m not realy worried about the amount of oil which was lost. It cant be much.
What do you think the replacement of the axle would cost (axle and labour)?
Thanks Ben
