2003 fx4 with 250,000 miles worth buying

Im looking at a 2003 fx4 with 250,000 miles on it. Its sitting in the inpound lot (my dads a cop) and i could probly get it for $1500. The body and interior are in very good condition. any thoughts. I have a 95 chevy 1500 with 200,000 would it be a upgrade or should i pass.

If you think it was really well maintained, it may be worth it. I personally wouldn't do it unless it was immaculate.

I'd rather put $1500 elsewhere than in a 250,000 mile motor regardless. It 250,000 miles dude!! Its basically done!

If you are an ace mechanic and don't mind working a lot on it to keep it going, go for it. If you have to pay others for anything other than basic maintenance, then pass.

I traded my 97 F150 with 255,000 miles on it and got $2000 for it + $1500 discount from Ford because I was buying a brand new 13 F150...

It was running great and I never had any major issues with it, but it was also on most of it's OEM parts too.... I had done all the regular maintenance stuff on it and while it was still "tight", it was also only a matter of time for things to start going on it...

I would have kept it if I had a place to keep it, but since I don't, it got traded... They said right off it was going to go to "auction", so who knows where it ended up..

Mine had the 5.4 and E4OD in it. XLT Super Cab and 4x4. I had just put new tires on it about 4 months before, so that was HALF of the $2000 trade in alone! ha!

Anyway, if the body and interior is clean and it runs good, it could be a steal... Just know that just about anything can go out on it at any time, so have a budget for that.. But since you already have a 200,000 mile Cheby, you probably already know that..

Good luck!

Mitch

more than likely the transmission will give you issues before the motor as it depends on the driver... the more you baby the motor the longer the transmission will last, add into that larger tires will affect things as well.
$1500 and it don't leak oil or blow smoke is good. with nice paint and interior is a plus, a bit of a learning curve from the Chevy but like any car/truck look underneath if it is all rusted out it is trash if not you could fix it up a bit and resell it.

Kelly Blue Book says that truck in fair condition brings over 6 grand. Surprised me too! You gotta know the truck is wore out and is going to need a lot of work in the near future. It might be a good truck to buy, clean it up a lot and flip it for some dandy profit. The profit you could either dump in yer GM or buy another one to drive or flip. Coming from a police pound means you won't be getting a clean title and the only buyers you can sell to will be cash buyers. There will be no financing on the truck, ever.

For $1500, you aren't taking much of a risk. So if you can drive it and it drives, sounds, etc. alright, go for it.

I have a 2001 with 4.6 that has 327000 miles and counting. If it looks good it would be a deal at 1500.

Just bought a 99 xl 4x4 4.6 a month ago with 244k. Runs darn near perfect. Put front brakes on it. Changed the oil, drive it everywhere. Drive it till it pukes!

There were guys on here 5-10 years back with 350k and still going. Mine had over 200k on it, when the person driving it didn't check the oil on it. I changed the oil with some Lucas added in, figuring I had nothing to lose at that point, A rod finally stopped the crank cold while idling two months later. The 4.6 is a tough engine. If it was well maintained, $1500 is a steal.

Fast forward to almost a month later, and I have it back from the shop running smooth as glass. I also rebuilt the front suspension on it, and now with the engine and suspension work, it feels like I am driving a brand new truck again.,,,,98
