You first self help is understanding how the system works so you can trouble shoot.
The gyrtions you go though are indicative of the trouble area.
Here is how it works from the beginning as you operate the dash switch to 4H.
The switch tells the control module to operate the case motor to it's first position.
This engages the front drive shaft, operates a firewall solenoid relay that routes vacuum from the motor's intake tract to the axle actuator and returns a signal back to the module to light the dash lamp..
The actuator locks the front axles together.
.
Trouble shoot from switch on with motor running.
How far does the sequence go before a failure in this sequence is noted?
Remember the case motor has to be powered by the control module through a relay and also reverses when you switch 4X4 off.
For get what you do to get it back. When you find the problem it will make sense then.
Good luck.
