anybody here about a formal recall? i know there was one in the works.
one of my straps is completely rotted out and the other is in bad shape. I've got them rigged up to hold for now.

 

Yea, I had the problem. No recall tho.

 

You live in Rhode Island and have a 10 year old vehicle and you don't expect rust?

 

No recall yet but I did get a call & email from the NHTSA about my complaint, they asked if they could forward my complaint to the equivalent agency in Canada. They also said that the investigation into this issue is ongoing.

 

it's not a question of expecting rust. but when the rust causes a safety issue with reports of the gas tank falling off the truck and catching on fire, it's a slight concern.
It's not a new england question. it's nationwide. It's a defect of using a substandard critical part.

By the way, I have 3 other 10 year old vehicles. BMW, Nissan and a Volvo and none of them have the rust this truck has. I had an 88 F150 that rusted out so bad I had to pull it off the road. Looked nice but go underneath and it looke like a rust land oasis.

This is a FORD problem. New England or not.

Ford to recall 1.1M pickup for gas tank problem

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — Ford Motor Co. is recalling 1.1 million pickup trucks because the gas tanks can fall off and cause fires.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday on its website that the metal straps holding the tanks can rust, allowing them to fall, rupture and catch fire.

The defect has been blamed for eight fires, three of which spread to the rest of the truck. One person was injured, suffering first- and second-degree burns, Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood said.

The recall affects certain 1997 through 2004 Ford F-150 models, as well as some 1997 through 1999 model year F-250 pickups. Also affected are Lincoln Blackwood pickups from the 2002 and 2003 model years. They were sold in cold-weather states where salt is used to clear roads. The salt corroded straps holding the tanks and they broke, NHTSA said.

The trucks were originally sold or are now registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington, D.C.

Sherwood said the company will notify owners in September to bring their trucks to dealers who will replace the straps with new ones that are coated to resist corrosion. Parts to fix the problem, he said, won't be widely available until then.

People with questions should contact their dealer, who can install a cable to hold the tanks in place until the replacement straps arrive, Sherwood said.

I'm glad I waited to replace mine. I noticed something hanging from the bottom of my truck a while back and looked under there and the rear tank strap on my 2000 supercab was rusted in half with the half that hangs completely missing. Got a ratchet strap out of the bed and rigged it up. Been driving it like that for a while now just putting off replacing the straps (probably not the best idea, but hey). Now that they have a formal recall, I can get them for free!

 

So what does that do for those of us that already replaced theirs?

Back on 08, I was trying to figure out what that thumping noise was under my truck when I noticed my tank was bouncing around between my skid plate and the bed. Damn glad I had the skid plate. Was really upset with Ford at the time for skimping on something as important as that.

 

dose this recall include a f-150 if you not the original owner???i all so i have 125.000 miles on it now,will this effect the recall????

 

Won't matter. Go to your local dealer and git'r done.

 

I just saw the recall on the news, looks like I'll be getting that fixed once I get back from vacation..

 

Wait for the recall letter and for your dealer to get parts unless you have an immediate failure. Mid to late fall, probably.

Just seen this on the news here in CA....So, no recall in CA i guess?
Last time i looked, didnt see any rust on the straps...
