trailer towing package?

How do you tell if a F150 is equipped with this option? Looking at buying a trailer plug harnesses and it asks with or without tow package.

Any feedback would be helpful.

If you had it already you wouldn't need to buy a trailer plug probably unless your replacing your stock one. Mine has the trailer package. Includes reciever hitch trailer plug trans oil cooler and maybe more.

Towing package from factory usually includes a trans cooler, 4 and 7 pin trailer connectors lighting and control, and hitch receiver and could include a larger alternator and battery.
A connector is included under the dash to plug in an electric brake controller using the correct adapter per the mfger of the controller.
Depending on states laws, electric brakes are often required with trailer weights over 2500.
Good luck.
For towing capability, your truck has a max rated 'gross combined weight' rateing as it came equipped from Ford.
If you intending to tow high weights, pay attention to this.
Good luck.

Well I found I do not have the tow package. The boat has surge brakes and I pulled it for the last few years with a 98 Dodge dakota 2x with a 3.9 6 banger. So a F150 (4.6 V8) with out tow package will handle this easy. Just added a class III reese hitch on the truck: now I just need to find the correct harness.

I need help figuring out if I have the towing pkg. or not. When I purchased Truck 2003 Ford F-150, 4.2, I was told it was included. I have a 4 pin plug, but a square hitch, it looks to be mounted on frame. I want to make sure, because purchasing travel trailer. Side sticker says I can haul 6,300 lbs. Also, do I need a larger transmission cooler or does this all come together. I have been reading some forums, now more confused. Please help!!!

This question about towing capacity comes up very often and is never understood enough.
There are a number if items you need to know for selecting trailer weights.
1.What is the Gross Combined Weight Rateing of the truck.
That is the max combined weight of the truck and trailer in a 'loaded' condition.
For example: A truck's GCWR of 11,000 lbs with a truck weight of 6000 lbs loaded with passengers, gas and all other items leaves the loaded trailer weight of 5000 lbs.
2. Has the truck had tire size down grade that does not have the same weight rateing, are you equipped with a trailer brake controller and 7 pin tow connector?
There are many sub items that go into legal towing if one looks at all the items.
The GCWR tells it all no matter what you are told the truck can tow.
.
As a comment, towing a hard travel trailer with a 4.2 is not a real good idea unless it is super light or is a pop-up type.
Good luck.

I haven't seen a 4.2 truck that's rated to tow 6300#. That's not a good combo for towing a travel trailer.

Those specs are generic - they do not consider the engine, transmission, and axle ratio. This is a lot more accurate and specific:

http://www.trailerlife.com/Towing-Guides/

To clcleary, here is a direct link to the 2003 guide:

http://www.trailerlife.com/assets/Do...?id=4294968263

Depending on all these factors, a 2003 with a 4.2 can tow between 2000# and 5700#. No matter what, 6300# is over ratings.
