Coolant smell from vents

Interesting development in the last couple months, I've been smelling coolant when the A/C or heater runs. It's not constant by any means but disconcerting at any rate.

I don't have the typical fogging on the windshield, the floor is bone dry, coolant levels have remained constant and the heater core/hoses were replaced less than two years ago by the dealer.

Any thoughts on what it could be? Should I be concerned?

Yeah, you have a leak in your heater core, more than likely. The bad part is that you have to tear apart the entire dash to replace it.

Get some different color Sharpies or paint pens and mark the screw heads and the panel area around the screw heads to assist with re-assembly. Take some pics also during dis-assembly.

What you have is a 'weeping' heater core IMO.. Just enough residue to get outside the core, but not enough to drip or show any significant loss of coolant.

Good luck!

I made that mistake. I used that stuff to clog a weeping radiator. ended up replacing radiator but the stop-leak stuff clogged my heater core. I has no heat anymorez

Well, I managed to get it swapped out this weekend. Went ok I suppose. Discovered two plastic washers on the ground during reassembly (after passenger side was buttoned up) and could not imagine that they just fell off the core as I went back inside to put it on. Went ahead and finished, pressured up.. road tested and no leaks anywhere, so I'm hoping that they were from something else and not from the QD lines. Ugh.. what a pain if I have to go back in. haha

Just did mine yesterday. All went well. Those two plastic washers might go to the quick connects on the heater hoses. Inside the hose is a o-ring, plastic washer, o-ring and then the plastic latching piece. If you left out the plastic ring it might still not leak but could start leaking after a while. If you have the disconnect removal tool for the heater hoses you can check them buy just draining a little coolant and checking them out. These washers are about 3/4" outside diameter with a 5/8" center hole.
