1997 F150 4.2 V6 --- Complete Rebuild -- Original Owner

I knew something was wrong when my cruise control did not cut off while I tapped on brake. I had to jamn brake down while on freeway to shut off.

I drove it a few more days leaving the CC alone.

A week later I wanted to go for a drive. I had a heck of a time getting it into reverse and drive. I tried stepping on brake hard and it worked. I went a couple of blocks and tried to put it in reverse. I had to slam on brake to switch gears.

Now after I filally got it in my driveway and its stuck in park. Runs fine but stuck in park.

FYI. Prior to this I repaired a loose wire in the steering column which controlled one rear brake light. I do not think its the same issue though.

Your brake lamp circuit is not working.

See owner's manual for shift interlock bypass instructions.

 

Also make sure the cruise control recall has been done.

I had to use the shift interlock bypass process to get it in gear. My brake lights do not work. All other lights do.

I checked fuses in cab and under hood all seemed fine.

Whats the next step? Thanks in advance.

 

Have you pulled or wired a trailer in the recient past, or maybe bottomed out on the trailer wires. Check anything related to the trailer plug also. It's probably the switch though.

 

The trailer lighting circuits are independently fused and are separated from the vehicle's lighting circuits by relays. That would be a dead end.

Not always, had a friend that hooked a trailer to her's and blew the fuse for the brake lights and had the same problems. If something is shorted in the wiring it could still have the same problem.

This is a secondary area to check if the others don't pan out. projectSHO89 is way better than me at this, just wanted to pass along what had happened to me.

I don't mean any disrespect.

 

On a 97 with factory towing package, there is no chance of a trailer harness causing a problem back on the vehicle's side of the circuit brake lamp circuit unless there are faults on the vehicle side of the circuit..

Now, if the circuit had been hacked up by an owner or shop, all bets are off.

 

again you're looking at a brake switch or wiring associated to the brake switch

 

I can't stress the importance enough of making sure the cruise recall is done - this is a fire hazard. The disconnect switch on the master cylinder starts leaking and shorts out and starts a fire with the truck TURNED OFF. If your cruise is not disconnecting when you hit the brake, this disconnect switch MAY ALREADY BE SHORTED. If the recall HAS been done, the fuse in the harness installed by the recall may be blown.

 

If the fuse in the recall harness is blown, the cruise will never engage in the first place. Same for the fuse that supplies the brake lamp circuit.

The SCDS is a redundant disconnect switch for the speed control. The primary disconnect is the brake lamp switch. If that fails to disconnect the cruise, a harder application of the brake pedal is supposed to open the SCDS via hydraulic pressure and should remove operating power from the servo.

 

Don't know if you still have this problem or not....Check the brake light switch at the brake pedal/arm. It may not be activating when you depress the pedal, hence no brake light and the truck wont go out of park. Had the same problem. Old thread and you probably already figured this out.

 

on my 97 I just pulled the fuse and kept going. The only downside was the door dingger dinged when the door was open all the time, even when the lights were off and keys were not in ignition, it still dinged...

 

does the cruise recall include the 2002 models? I just picked up a 02
