2001 5.4L w/factory propane, do I buy?
First time here, couldn't find this subject in the search, so I hope someone can help. I'm looking at buying a 2001 F-150 4x4 with a factory propane system. I haven't found out any details yet, other than it is being sold as a gas truck only, possibly because the propane system may have never been used. It was a government truck in B.C., there's actually 2 of them to choose from. I'm told that the module is around $1200 in canada if the system doesn't work. I've had dual fuel vehicles for years with no problems, but no factory installed systems. Would anyone have any warnings, suggestions or info that I should consider? How about mileage compared to gas. Propane was well less than half the price of regular gas when the prices were at the peak, now it's about 60-70% of the price, so I'm wondering if it's still economical. My current aftermarket propane system on a 95 F-150 gets the same mileage on both propane and gas - very poor... Anyways, any insight would be very appreciated.

i saw an episode of trucks and they said running propane lengthens the life of the engine significantly since its a more clean burning fuel. as for power and MPG they said it stays the same i believe which im sure you already knew so other than that im no help to you.
not sure how it is in canada, but i think they also said you get a tax break for using a cleaner fuel

We have a bunch of '00 and '03 F150 7700 gas/propane factory bi-fuel trucks at work. In general, the propane systems have been troublesome, but that might be caused by under-use (I've put a total of 150K on two of these trucks and burned three tanks of LPG). I know we had some issues w/ check engine lights caused by the propane system, which couldn't be turned off w/o fixing the propane system (the trucks ran fine on gas). In California, a vehicle won't pass a smog inspection (and can't be registered) w/ a check engine light on. I don't know how (or if) this issue was dealt with. The propane system also adds some bulk to an already crowded 5.4 engine bay. I have some pictures of the bi-fuel system in my gallery.
