5.4 3v swap into 96 mustang gt

maybe i can tell you guys i have swapped an 05 5.4 3v into my 96 gt. i intend to get at least 400hp/400lb-ft out of it. if you guys want any help with power i need you to give mr feedback on issues with valvetrain not to include noises. i have no noises with mine. i tonly has 1500 miles on it though. i have added short runner intake, not a filter/intake but i modified the factory intake for 5700 rpm max hp. i also made custom headers out of stainless. i am using the factory 96 gt pcm with no modifications. i had to fab everything to get it in. i estimate my power to be around 325 at 5500 right now.
i also deleted the cmcc plates. now your turn. i need info. -bill

He just doesn't give up

Puts the "no replacement for displacement" theory to shame, I'd love to hear your reasoning behind this. No disrespect intended on my end.

I'd go ahead and pull that motor back out... Awesome idea, but these mod motors REALLY need some beef.

Pull that motor and replace everything with higher performance parts, forged parts.

Lightning guys can help you with forged parts.

But yeah, that engine will be a torque monster for your little mustang.. Awesome idea.

Good luck with your build-up.

Glad you asked. Considering Stock vs. Stock the 4.6 3v makes the same ammount of horsepower as the 5.4 3v. Granted the 5.4 3v has more tq, but the available modifications to the new 4.6 3v are endless and since the 4.6 has a shorter stroke than the 5.4 it can be taken higher in rpm than the 5.4 if need be.

I've heard the 5.4's have quite a long stroke, I need a visual to understand this.

I read about your car on modularfords.com

Is that 400rwhp or at the flywheel? If you are giving ratings at the flywheel you should be able to come close to that n/a if not acheive it. With rwhp im not so sure.

Are you running a stick? I would love to see numbers on what a 3v 5.4 will do with a manual tranny.

Explain how you are using the stock (GT) pcm with the 5.4 3V..It would seem to me that it would have been much easier to replace it with the pcm from the donor vehicle that you got the engine from. I invision many issues here..

I'd have to agree - owning both an '05 5.4L 3V in my Lariat SCREW and the '05 Mustang GT with the 4.6L 3V - the 4.6 is intended to rev higher/quicker in a lighter appliaction....the 5.4 (at least as configured for the F-150) would seem to be at a disadvantage over the 4.6 3V with a longer stroke and lower max RPM threshold - plus extra weight? Can't imagine swapping the two engines out as there are many aftermarket items for the 4.6 3V Mustang engine that are N/A for the 5.4L.......get the 4.6 and add an ATI ProCharger or Vortech SC and you'll have all the power you want.....plus it would probably be an easier swap for your Mustang and you could go ahead and add the 5 sp tranny as well....the '05 mtx tranny is a HUGH improvement over the earlier models in both durablility and shift linkage. While Torque is important - particularly in a truck/towing applicaiton - it's not as critical in a lighter car like the Mustang that is not going to be used to tow anything....IIRC the torque numbers on the stock 4.6L 3V are pretty good anyway...does beg the question though, I had thought the new '07 Shelby GT Cobra with 480 horses (using a roots type SC) was going to be based on a 5.4L 4V.....but can it be our Triton with revised heads....I'd think not - it must have a different bore/stroke ratio than the Triton.....anybody know the answer?

Ditto.....I'd imagine they aren't even comaptible? And the powertrain programming between the two aren't even close.....could be wrong though and would like to hear your plan - can it be done?

Wouldn't his best choice have been to find a 4.6L 32V from a Cobra/Mach? Seems like he'd have less isues in the long run. It also would have fit better without custom fabbing, etc. And, there are parts galore available for it as well.

If he just wants an expensive experiment that -no one else/not many have done-, I'll be interested to see what he gets out of it.

As far as issues, we've had none from our 05 5.4 with only a little over 3K miles on it.

Ford is putting a supercharged 5.4 in the new GT500 Mustang and GT40. You have to hope they know what they are doing. If the 4.6 was the better choice for the high end go fasts, they would have used it.

Sure, but they have beefed internals. That makes a huge difference. And they are 4v ...
