Overdrive or not to Overdrive? That is the question

I got a 1997 F150. Recently I noticed that when I drive in overdrive there is a hard downshift 4th to 3rd (I believe). However, when I don't drive in overdrive it doesn't occur. What could be the problem? It's inconvenient to have to turn the overdrive off everytime I am ready to drive the truck.

Howdy and welcome!

You have a 4 speed tranny. Turning off OD locks out fourth gear, so it will never be able to shift from 4 to 3 if it cant get to 4th in the first place.

Post up the TRANS code on the door jam sticker. E is the E4OD, and U is the 4R70w. What is the milage on the truck, and when was the last fluid flush?

Hesitation in Acceleration

Also, help me understand why today I press on the gas and it resulted in a slight hesitation in it's acceleration....RPMs just completely dropped and then increased again.
