Meat in butcher paper...ok to freeze?

Long story short, I have a buttload of Mule Deer meat that I just got back from the butcher. It's wrapped in, are you ready?...butcher paper. Anyway, I just want to make sure this stuff will keep in the butcher paper in the freezer and not get freezer burned.

I have always vacuum sealed meat/fish, etc before freezing it.

It should be fine depending on how long it's gonne be in the freezer. If it was mine, I'd zip-lock it. Better safe then sorry.

Yup, gotta agree with JW. A box of gallon size Ziploc freezer bags is only a couple dollars. Why wouldn't you use them?

I am having a big cookout Saturday (My 4th annual "Deer and Beer"), so I'll probably cook 1/2 or more then. I'll give some away, and then save the rest for later.

Yum-Yum!

That'll put me in Arkansas. I'd rather have my nuts pounded flat with a wooden mallet then have to go to there.

got it.

I wouldn't leave it in the paper unless you were going to use it in the next few days. Paper is not much different than just putting the meat in the freezer with no wrapper...

My parents have done this for years. They wrap it in a plastic wrap first then butcher paper. Keeps for a long time that way. They use huge rolls of plastic wrap, but I don't see why glad cling wrap wouldn't do the trick. Just paper it will freezer burn before too long.

I'll just head south, hopefully you will think enough of us that you will put out little signs pointing to your location.

Are you on the map at the top of the section?

I agree with the above, once you use what you are going to, just vac-pac the rest, I wouldn't even take it out of the paper, just throw the frozen wrapped piece in and suck&seal.

Butcher paper will last for several months with out any ill effects. the PITA is when you thaw it out, it leaks everywhere, so the ziplock bags or whatever will help with this problem.
