I would like to know the Ford approved method for changing the fluid in a 2001 F150 transmission(4R70W). ie, the method used by Ford Dealers. That's all I want to know.

 

They use a flushing machine. I do it like this.

That is for the 4R100, but other than being a different amount and Mercon V, it's no different.

IMO... my local Tranny guy does it so damn cheap it isn't worth doing it yourself,...
He drops the pan, adjusts whatever (bands?) he does, new filter, and fresh fluid.. all for $61.50 tax included.
No WAY would I wanna spend an afternoon doin it when I can get it done professionally for that.

 

Just dropping the pan only changes a third or so of the fluid.

There is nothing adjustable inside. All he can do is inspect.

 

Yes dropping the pan only removes about a 1/3 or so of the fluid. On the 2001's and down (i think.. mine is a 01 and it has it) there is a drain plug on the torque converter. Once you drain it and the pan then all thats left is whats in the cooler and you get a fresh filter and a chance to clean the pan and magnet. Not to mention that bath in tranny fluid if you arent carefull with pulling the pan. The guy that decided tranny pans shouldn't have factory drain plugs should be drug out into the street and shot.
