Trying to take oil pan off to replace the seal on 99 f150 4.2 2wd. It leaks. Can't get oil pan off and I can get it back on once I cleaned it by dropping it down. Any suggestions? I have raised the engine loosend the tranny mount. May have to take to dealer but know I will get killed.

Is the pan loose or is it still stuck to the block? The engine needs to be lifted about 2" off the mounts. Once all the bolts are out including the ones from the pan to the transmission. The sensor and the dip stick need disconected then pry the pan loose and you should be able to wiggle it out.

 

I have gotten it loose but the dipstick is pulled out and the sensor is on the block itself. When I try to reinstall it seems to be bumping against something. I think it may be the pick up screen but if that was the case then how was it on in the first place.

 

did you remove the dip stick and the tube.

 

Both the Ford Factory Service Manual and several posts say a 4.2 oil pan can not be removed while on the truck. I'm willing to be it has to be at least part way out.

 

If it can't be removed then Haynes and Chilton are going to be receiving a complaint from me. In no words was it said in the manual that it could not be removed while in the truck. Does that mean you have to pull the whole Engine!? I wouldn't think so. What does the manual state in the procedure for removal of the OilPan.

1. Remove engine from vehicle as described at Engine/Service and Repair.

Another hint is from the labor to remove and replace the oil pan, with a manual 7.3 hours. With an automatic 8.0 hours. I didn't look but wanna bet the R&R for the engine is about exactly the same thing?

btw, this is for a '97 4.2L scab.

That doesn't mean it's so, its just that that is the Ford procedure.

 

Whats a SCAB. I would not think they would have to remove it. that would be a little over kill. I do think they might have to pull the manifold to get it up higher thats all. I did not want to do that because that Haynes and Chilton really suck. I am going to from now on go to the public library and make a copy of the Mitchell manual.

sorry, scab is supercab, in '97 2 1/2 doors. I know this sucks. It's hard to believe they would design a motor you couldn't remove the oil pan on the truck, even if you had to raise it, remove other parts, etc. Yes, the dealer would kill you, 8 hours here is about $640 just to remove and replace the pan.

Were you talking about the rear main seal? The front seal? With a little luck you could probably do those without pulling the pan. Oil is very tricky to trace. Even if it drips from somewhere, the oil may be starting somewhere else. Just be sure.

I assumed you started removing the pan. Can you get it back in place from where you are?

 

Tried putting it back on but for some reason something is preventing me about half an inch. I think its the pick up screen and it may need to hook into a windage tray. Don't know. SOme people say to undo the pickup and the pan will come out. I think the older trucks are better now. At least easier to work on.

 

Yep,you're gonna have to pull the engine to remove the pan. I found this out by helping a friend try to remove his in a 99 F150,4.2.

 

How hard is it to remove the engine. I would be working by myself of course. I have pulled engines on all kinds of things from combines to tractors but not on a newer vehicle. BTW how do I get a hold of the alldata manual.
