Question Is it safe to go back to a stock valve body on a performance built transmission?

Watch what you ask for, you just may get it...

I ask this question because about a year ago I put in an Interceptor transmission which comes with a shift kit installed. The 1-2 shifts were brutal and I switched the 1-2 accumulator springs out for the stock springs. That helped some but the 1-2 shift is still too hard under no-load low speed shifting. It really gets annoying in stop and go traffic. When it shifts at say 15-20 mph (low or no load) it will joust the entire truck.
I guess the first question is will a stock valve body correct this and is it safe to revert back to stock with everything else being performance (2200 stall, blue plate specials, HD servos).
I hate to have MT put the shift retard back into the shift program but is that what is needed to get rid of this problem?
Any advice from knowledgeable transmission gurus would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

WLF

What kind of valvebody are you using. Sounds like something is wrong with the valvebody to me. Actually it sounds like the exact result when someone does a j-mod on a truck valvebody.

dirtyd0g, Thanks for the reply.

The transmission came from Performance Automotive. They are known for building race Ford transmissions. I wanted something strong but am now reconsidering the comfort. They built the valve body and it came installed in the transmission. It is suppose to have a Trans-go shift kit installed.
Here is their web site:

My question is; what is a "J-mod" and again, can I go back to a stock valve body?

I just read on the Troyer website that he may have to back down on the light throttle shift firmness when using the superchip with the Factory Tech Valve Body. I have his 4 program chip. I will give him a call and see what he says.

The stock valvebody is better than one with a transgo shift kit installed in it.
The factory tech valvebody is the best IMO. The J-mod is an article written by one of the transmissions engineers teaching people how to modify these transmissions. It does not work on truck valvebody's.
Factory Tech now has a monsterbox available for 4r70w units, Troyer will be listing them soon I'm sure. I'm sure they don't know about it yet because it is extremely new.
Yes the stock valvebody will be fine. The most important thing is to check your accumulator springs. If the shifts are too ahrd you may want to replace the EPC while you are in there to see if it makes a difference. That could be the whole problem.

The EPC was upgraded to a new valve/new style with the rebuild last November.
The 1-2 accumulator springs were replaced with stock springs about two weeks ago with a complete transmission fluid change at the Ford dealer. I still have not called Mike Troyer about the pressures in the chip.
Thanks again for the reply.
