Question about Mark Kovalsky's procedure
I have a 99 F-150 with 4R70W tranny and have changed the fluid and filter by removing the pan and draining the fluid as per the Haynes Manual for my truck, because my pan doesn't have a drain plug. I wanted to try this procedure to see if it would work for me. I have a few questions though.
1. What type of special funnel do I need to buy?
2. How do I clamp the clear tubing over the line coming from the transmission? Does the clear tubing have to be bigger to fit over the line and using a worm-drive clamp, can I tighten it down or is it necessary? How does the fluid get pumped out from there? Does the 2nd person have to start the engine until I see air in the line?
3. On the NOTE section, If you drained the pan and the torque converter, fluid will not run out until you fill the pan a second time. Run the engine for 30 seconds, then stop and add six more quarts., is that taking in consideraton that the TC is already drained?
4. To drain the TC, do I just remove the rubber plug and the drain plug, how does the old fluid come out the return line? Which line is that? The front or back?

I think the return line on the 4R70W is the lower line. That transmission doesn't have a front and rear line, it has a top and bottom.
One thing that is missing from that procedure is that the transmission needs to be warmed up first.
I am understanding the answers except for question 4. I read on Peter Ferlow's website about the 4R70W that his instructions, you place your bucket under the TC drain plug and the fluid pours out slowly. On Mark Kovalsky's instructions, the fluid is pumped out of the TC by starting the engine. Which one of these is true? I also read on Mark's instructions that the fluid won't come out of the return line until you fill the torque converter back up. If I fill it back up, won't the old and new fluid mix? Is the old fluid actually in the return line at that point and then by running the engine, it is pumped out of the line?

If you run the converter or transmission dry you will surely destroy it.
