MattT - Since you sound like you might want a little more room in the cab, you might consider getting a Light Duty Crew Cab. Ford is coming out with them for the 2000 model year. I think a 5.4 in a Light Duty will give you better mileage. I had my Super Duty weighed - empty except for 2 people and a full gas tank (38 gal on the Crew Cab) - and it came to 6700 pounds! Over 3 tons without a load!! The F-350s have an even heavier frame! I bought mine for towing and the F-250 SD has a higher towing capacity than the F-350 because it's lighter. The GCVW is 20,000 pounds for both vehicles.
My friend got a 99 F-150 4x4 Extended Cab Short Bed with the 5.4 and paid about the same as I did. I don't have a 4x4 but he doesn't have the towing capacity. He can get his into his garage and mine sticks out three feet.
Decide what you want to do with your truck and then get one that'll do what you want. If your worried about gas mileage, don't get any truck.
