i have 1999 fi50 with code "E" transmission. think that is 4r100.
recently i notice when pressing od button that the trans continues to freewheel even though it shifts out of ovedrive. it goes through all gears smoothly but whines in first, second and third but not in od. i suspect that coverter lock up is not working.
i spoke to one trans guy and he said he thought the planitaries were going and would require a new trans and suggested ford as the cheapest option. i think it may just be the lockup not functioning and causing the whine. thanks, larry

 

by the way. the whine has a very "electric motor" sound to it. does anyone have any ideas what this might be. i know if i take it to the dealer they are going to rip me. the nise is somewhat present when the car is in nuetral or park as well. this seems to point to torque converter and lock up. what do you folks think. thanks. larry

 

ONE MORE THING before anyone responds. are there any external electrical items that should be checked such as relays or switches that could affect the electromagnetic lockup? i want to be able to rule these out before going INSIDE.

 

nobody knows what is happening here? got to be somebody who has an idea.

 

Sorry riskdr2, I never heard of a transmission whining. The only complaints of whining that that I've ever read about is with axles and wives.

Hang tight and maybe someone else who's experienced this tranny noise will chime in.
