According to airport transmission in rochester new york, my torque convertor "blew up" and took out the whole tranny.... How does this happen???? here is there break down of the cost 1,790.00 for a new tranny, 400.00 for labor and 100.00 for fluid my thoughts are to just go and buy an aftermarket tranny form some place .. what do you guys think?

 

I'm not sure what tranny you have, but Gregg Evans (Factory_tech screen name) makes monster box transmissions from the 4r100's. Take a look at the lightning guys, and a lot of them use it. I also know that Tim of Chickeneers Engineering (http://www.chikenearsengineering.com) sells them. I think I heard that he can also do the 4r70's. They are a little more that what your prices are, but they are build for racing, and a lot stronger.

Just looking at fluid cost you can tell what kind of margin they are after. I don't think I spent more that $50 on Amsoil.

Anyhow, it happens. The TC is the weak link but I'd question the Tranny being destroyed also. But I'm no tanny guy.

I would definetly go aftermarket, unless you just drive it as a people mover but even in that case I might look around for an alternative. At least a better, aftermarket TC.

 

They probably said the tranny was toast because when the TC went a zillion pieces of metal went flowing through the tranny and the radiator. Most recomend that the radiator be replaced also when such things go boom.

 

Airport Transmission gets the highest recommendations from my friends that seem to know what they're talking about. I could believe what they said in your case too. Still sucks though. Good luck.

 

If your going to spend that kind of money then get a after market one as it should last longer than a regular tranny.

 

what about a low mileage junkyard tranny. get a low mileage radiator from the same vehicle. Put a big cooler on it and Amsoil in it and your good to go. This does not get you an upgrade however and I understand the urge to upgrade when your in there replacing stuff anyway. There are many companies that offer stronger TC's and you could upgrade that weak link on the junkyard tranny.

 

Where did you get your AMSoil? I think the price I paid was about $85 (with the discount):

14 qts (4r70) x ~$6.20 = $86.80

Did you forget to drain the torque converter?
