Can't Hear Turn Signal Flasher

97 F-150, 4.6L V8.

My turn signals work fine. But I can't hear the clicking anymore. No, I'm not that deaf yet! I sometimes forget and leave them on. I think I may need a new flasher. The fuses would be OK if the turn signals work. Right?

Anyway, can't find the sucker. I know it's under the dash somewhere. Anybody change one? Cost?

Just a little something from the Haynes manual:
The turn signal and hazard flashers are controlled from a single unit located to the right of the steering column under the instrument panel (box with two relays plugged into it). When the flasher unit is operating properly, an audible click can be heard during operation. Failure of outside lights or lack of the characteristic clicking noise may indicate a faulty turn signal bulb, blown fuse, or faulty signal unit.

Thanks Flafonman - So I'll check:
1. the bulbs (although they all look like they work for the outside)
2. the fuse (but if they blown wouldn't they not work at all?)
3. the signal unit (is this the flasher?)

Yes to all of the above. The signal unit has two relays in it, and I believe they are the same p/n, one for the signals, one for the hazards. You should be able to "frog" them and see if you get your "click" back.

I know you can buy a heavy-duty flasher relay that makes a loud click, and I remember seeing relays in the JC Whitney catalog years ago that played Love Me Tender while the signals were on. If you're an Elvis fan you may want to look into it.

I gave up on trying to fix it.
I just put a bumper sticker on that says:

...and our hero rides off into the sunset.

I can't believe they still make these things.
Love Me Tender

This makes me wonder.
If you hate Elvis would having Love Me Tender play when you changed lanes prevent you from using your signals? And conversely, If you liked Elvis would you ride around with your signals on just so you could listen? Would having Love Me Tender play while the hazards were on be soothing or would it drive you crazy while you waited for AAA?

I think too much.
